About the Author
Jonathan Foyle worked as a surveyor on Canterbury Cathedral, then spent eight years as Curator of Historic Buildings at Historic Royal Palaces, before being appointed Chief Executive of World Monuments Fund Britain in 2007. Over the last decade, he has become a well-known television presenter on architecture and cultural history.

The Ultimate Canterbury Cathedral Guide

This book is the next best thing to actually visiting Canterbury Cathedral. In fact, if you are going to visit on a day filled with tourists, skip the crowds and buy the book.
Having visited on one of those over-crowded days, I will admit that it was still an awe inspiring experience. But, it was difficult to take in everything, read every informational sign, take a picture minus people, and truly appreciate every aspect of the meaning and history of this, one of the most important buildings in Christendom. "The Architecture of Canterbury Cathedral" by Dr. Jonathan Foyle has filled in the gaps I missed. It answers many questions I was unable to find answers to during my short visit.
Dr. Foyle's personal knowledge and love of the Cathedral comes through in every sentence. His understanding of history, everything from building methods to politics, is explained so that even an uneducated American, like I, can learn and appreciate the time, money, and labor of love required to build such a wondrous place. His ability to relate the history and changes to the Cathedral throughout the centuries in an uncomplicated manner, as well as the stories of the people who have built, lived, worked, and had an impact on the history of the church, and, at times, England, kept me interested and reading from beginning to end.
The photographs! Oh, how I wish I could have taken even one as well as Robert Greshoff. From cover to cover the photos are absolutely fantastic. Amazing. He truly caught the beauty and awesome wonder that is Canterbury Cathedral.
As I looked at and read, I was once again transported to that beautiful place, built by many men, over hundreds of years. It is truly proof that man can do anything when he has inspiration, vision, and perseverance.
I hope in the future to read another book by Dr. Foyle, perhaps on Hampton Court Palace?
