Being Smart about Gifted Children: A Guidebook for Parents and Educators, by Dona J. Matthews, Joanne F. Foster

The 'mysteries' of giftedness are unveiled in this book. The authors invite parents and educators to step into the 'mystery' and 'mastery' models of gifted education, to learn ways of developing a child's natural abilities, and to understand controversy surrounding commonly held assumptions in the field. They demonstrate the necessity to match educational experiences with a child's needs at any given time, and then proceed to explain how to make that happen.

Highly recommend for public school parents!
By Amanda Johnson
I would highly recommend this book for parents of academically-advanced children who are entering or already attending the public school system. I am not sure how helpful it is for other situations. We have a rising kindergartner who is academically on a 3rd grade level, and this book was extremely helpful for me to know how to advocate for him in our local public school. It also gave me some creative solutions for making sure his learning needs are met while also keeping him with his same-age peers for the sake of social skills, friendship and overall confidence. The first couple chapters focus on redefining giftedness in a way that was so helpful for me and completely changed my mindset on my son's abilities. The later chapters focus on assessment and practical solutions. I will be referring back to this book many times as we progress through his school journey.

Essential Reading for Parents of Gifted Children
By Sarah Chana Radcliffe
This book addresses all aspects of raising and teaching a gifted child. It answers questions that parents don't even know they should be asking! I love the style of this book - it is filled with compassion, plentiful realistic dialogues and case scenarios, and a generous dose of humor, making all the important information easily absorbed. Matthews and Foster, both doctorate level experts in the field of giftedness, bring their years of experience and education in the field to bear on questions like "when is assessment important? What if your child is smart but not gifted? Should you or shouldn't tell a child about his or her giftedness? How does giftedness affect academic performance and social and emotional development? How is giftedness assessed - what instruments and protocols are used and for what purpose - what is being measured exactly and what does giftedness mean exactly? What labels and diagnostic categories are used in the assessment process? What special educational needs do gifted kids have and how can they be met? How can parents and teachers help gifted children?" This is a book I would recommend for parents of smart kids and for therapists to recommend to parents of smart children (whether or not they are diagnosed) as well as a book for all educators.
Sarah Chana Radcliffe, author "Raise Your Kids without Raising Your Voice" and "The Fear Fix: Solutions for Every Childs Moments of Worry, Panic and Fear."

The first gifted book you should read!
By Carolyn K. of Hoagies' Gifted Education Page
Being Smart is a great introduction to giftedness, for the parent, teacher, even administrator, those who are brand new, and those who think they "know all about gifted children." Dispelling myths and answering questions along the way, Matthews and Foster step us through giftedness from identification to education, and into social / emotional. How to answer the tricky questions, how to support gifted kids in today's egalitarian world, and what to tell the kids along the way - Being Smart covers it all.

All the while, they meet their goal: share details on how we, parents and educators, can meet the gifted child's educational and social / emotional needs. Much more than just an introduction, Being Smart should be in every gifted book collection...
