The fourth book in the Pam of Babylon Series, Prayers for the Dying exposes more of what Kirkus Review said about Dream Lover, "A gritty, realistic portrait of the aftermath of deceit." Jack Smith's victims attempt to move forward while grappling with the pain and horror that he left behind. Pam makes a few startling revelations about herself, while Sandra hopes for a future with exciting expectations. Marie is in a most unlikely place, with the happiest news in the bleakest circumstances. Ashton's story of a lifetime love affair with Jack is finally told, with his heartache revealed.
Kirkus Review says about Suzanne Jenkins, "Jenkins writes with a fast-paced, scenic style, pushing the story forward and wasting little time on interior monologue or back story. Perhaps this is one of the best aspects of the novel--a page-turner, the story remains immediate, rarely breaking from forward motion. Jenkins develops characters not by describing them, but by placing them in conflict and context with new people, places and situations...The characters are sympathetic, round and believable; watching them grapple with difficult decisions creates an engaging, dynamic read." Review
This is the fourth book in the series about Jack Smith and his wife Pamand their families. Like all of the other books, it doesn't matter ifyou have read the books in the series or not, as they can be readindividually. This book starts off with Pam being newly engaged to Jackand looking forward to the life that lies ahead of her whilst Ash,Jack's lover since their teenage years, is left devastated that Jack has chosen a woman over him. The book continues with Ashley and Jack'sstory from the past and Pam's story from the present where she has beenleft dealing with being HIV positive, a legacy she shares with otherscourtesy of Jack. When Marie, Pam's sister and another of Jack's AIDSvictims, finds she is pregnant with her new partner Steve's child, lifecontinues to throw a few curve balls. I have enjoyed reading all four of Suzanne Jenkins' books and would recommend them to anyone. (LM) Chick Lit Club

Good 4th...
By ReaderChick
In this installment of Pam of Babylon, everybody is in a new place.
I had a hard time getting into the beginning of the book; it covers the early years of Jack and Pam and how they came to be. It picks up steam shortly, though, and it charges forward from there.
Pam has found herself, her voice, perhaps, and she is finally able to put to rest some of the people and things that have haunted her since Jack's death.
The secrets, surprisingly, aren't over yet, and some of the players from book 3 (like Ashton) have their stories developed a bit more.
Marie, in all her infinite madness and lifelong health problems, continues to spiral down, and her journey is a surprising one.
Pam comes to terms with her future, and she shares this with her children and awaits their acceptance, too.
I don't want to give too much away, but if you loved the books leading up to this, it won't dissapoint.

Outstanding Part of a Remarkable Series
By Susan L. Carrier
The entire series, Pam of Babylon, is a dark, well written, compelling look into a twisted relationship in a contemporary setting. This is book #4, as much depends on knowing the characters and the story, it probably does not stand well on it's own as a solo read, but as part of the series it absolutely shines as the next segment of the ongoing saga of the life of Pam of Babylon.
When I picked up book #1, it was some pretty rugged subject matter. Though a novel, it is no light fiction. The author has done a masterful and truly insightful job of developing her characters, exploring a very complex relationship matrix involving many main characters and how they influence and interact around the primary character of the book who is dead from the beginning of the story. Through all follows, you learn much of Jack, while watching the depth charges of his behaviors detonate deeper and deeper in the lives of his wife, children, mother, brother and his family, mistress, various lovers and those whom he used and abused when he was alive. It is one of the most remarkable series of books that I have read in my life, but it is not always comfortable, in fact frequently not, which is where the brilliance of this author really shines - she makes it possible to take this painful journey anyway, and I have learned a lot through reading her insightful narrative and observing her penetrating development of characters and their amazing interactions. I cannot recommend this series highly enough. But start with book #1. {Smile}

Everyone's life is still reeling with the ongoing traumas directly resulting from Jack's behavior. Pam has time to process more of the mess Jack left her in. She has her mother and mother-in-law to deal with. Her sister Marie is expecting a baby and develops a brain infection forcing Pam to make her mother Nelda pitch in instead of living the life of a woman with means. Some reviewers are offended by Pam. She is person who knew going in that Jack expected an impossible amount of freedom and had higher standards for her behavior than his own. She decided early on that she would start as she meant to go on and limited her responsibilities to what she could do perfectly. This was okay with Jack because she otherwise left him alone to play. The characters of Bill and Marie seem to get little sympathy in the book, but let's be honest, they are not sympathetic characters. They both had childhood traumas, but instead of taking responsibility for their lives, they lived off Jack. In fact most all these women either actively sought our Jack who then used them for sex, but many used him for money as well. So with the exception of Sandra and Pam, these women knew he was sexually active with lots of other partners and did nothing to protect themselves. Ash chose to give up his life to Jack's whims even though he knew other partners were out there he could have a normal life with.
This part of the saga of Pam had more to do with accepting that life goes on. We lose Dale and Marie, but Miranda comes to join our group of Jack survivors and life goes on. Processing pain and learning slowly who she can trust becomes part of Pam's journey forward and Ted comes into Ash's life. If Pam seems a little cold, it is because she is learning to protect herself and not let her best qualities be used against her like Jack did for so long. Pam is just a woman who did not see what was going on in her life. Very few people ever apologized to her for the turmoil their behavior caused her, they just expected her to make Jack's sins right: A task that was impossible for even Jack. I can personally speak to the sense of entitlement people you help constantly have. Not only do they feel no personal responsibility for their own plight, but they actually see you as having a responsibility for their future. If they are not your kids and you personally did not cause their plights, you owe them nothing more than you are willing to give. The character development and the pace continue as Pam and Sandra form an uneasy friendship. They are of disparate ages and interests, but they both had Jack's welfare as the center of their lives and they both have concern and mixed feelings about the other they have to resolve to move forward. Finally Tom and Sandra are able to move forward too.
