About the Author
Dimitris G. Manolakis is currently a Member of Technical Staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, Massachusetts. Prior to this he was a Principal Member of Research Staff at Riverside Research Institute. Since receiving his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Athens in 1981, he has taught at various institutions including Northeastern University, Boston College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute and co-authored two textbooks on signal processing. His research experience and interests include the areas of digital signal processing, adaptive filtering, array processing, pattern recognition, remote sensing and radar systems.

Vinay K. Ingle is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University, where he has worked since 1981 after receiving his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in many diverse areas including systems, signal/image processing, communications and control theory, and has co-authored several textbooks on signal processing. He has broad research experience in the areas of signal and image processing, stochastic processes and estimation theory. Currently he is actively involved in hyperspectral imaging and signal processing.

OK Book, Poor Binding Quality

I got this book for a class. The content was good, and it fit the class well, but the binding ripped apart about halfway through the book. It originally cracked about a few weeks into the course, and a few months later has split entirely. I now have two halves of a book and pages are falling out.

Not good for learning

I judge a book by my ability to learn the theory using only it as a resource. This one fails. I see attempts at good teaching practices - sorting problems by difficulty, using examples, etc., but the "tutorial" problems, the easiest ones, are a step beyond the examples in the book already. In other words, you can't check your understanding by reading an example and doing a quick problem, because you need to know it that well already and the examples aren't that great. For that matter, you can't run a quick problem and check anyway, since there are no selected answers provided. The equations are all numbered, not just the important ones, so it's hard to sort through and find the critical pieces of theory. If you know the theory and/or have a good teacher, this book can be a good supplement, and has good information on Matlab, but if you are learning for the first time, look somewhere else.

Also, the binding is bad and it does fall apart.

It's not worth the money

I own this book. While it does contain some valuable information on the Value Methodology process, it not to be considered more than a companion to the author's course on Value Enigeering. Thus, I have not found it to be a good nor readable resource.

Much of the text (326 pages) is devoted to overhead presentation type information, i.e., heading and bulletized list likely originating from the author's own presentations developed to teach his class. Have you ever received an overhead presentation without the author's notes? It is very difficult to understand the points being made. Many pages contain examples of forms that a VE team leader might want to use. They amount to little more than a page full of empty boxes. In the latter portion of the book, many pages contain very little information and lots of empty wordless space. This text is not a book, it is a compilation of stuff gathered over the years that the author has taught his VE course.

A meaningful revision of a classic work

I already owned and had read numerous times the original six volumes that this work is built from, so I wasn't sure if purchasing this one would have value to me beyond a collector's item. However, the author's introduction alone was very meaningful to me. Mr. Hayes' first book was written 34 years ago now, and the introduction provides his perspective on what has and hasn't changed in the world and in the art since he wrote it. As someone who aspires to not merely read about it but actually follow the path and example he has lived, it was invaluable for me to read about things from that bigger perspective.

There is also something meaningful about having such a hefty tome of wisdom in one place, with one table of contents and one index.

Lastly, I believe he has updated the language and descriptions of some things to how we talk about them now. This is definitely the place to go if you never read the original volumes, and it's worth a purchase and revisit if you did read them long ago.

I bought this book for the amount of information that it contains all in one volume. Not only is it full of information, it contains stories from the authors time training with Soke. All in all worth the money .

His previous books re-presented in one complete volume.

When I was a teenager, Stephen Hayes was one of my martial arts heroes. Although I did not practice Ninjutsu, I had all of his books, and enjoyed reading them very much. I really enjoyed the spirit of martial arts that he presented in his books. This is the complete collection of all those previous books rebound and presented in one volume. Not a comprehensive presentation of the art, but rather it is a good introduction to Ninjutsu from the perspective one of the first Westerners to bring the art to the West.

Manski begins with the conceptual problem of extrapolating predictions from one population to some new population or to the future. He then analyzes in depth the fundamental selection problem that arises whenever a scientist tries to predict the effects of treatments on outcomes. He carefully specifies assumptions and develops his nonparametric methods of bounding predictions. Manski shows how these tools should be used to investigate common problems such as predicting the effect of family structure on children's outcomes and the effect of policing on crime rates.

Good book on an important topic

The book is really easy to read even if your background in statistics is light.

it is rather opinionated (which is not necessarily a bad thing) and addresses important topics in statistical identification namely: what can you learn from a statistical model? This is too often a non discussed topic, either by econometricians who go too deep in the technical details, or by applied social scientists who look at statistics as a tool that helps to make their case.

Great book! I wish this book was around when I took graduate econometrics. In particular, it provided me with a much clearer understanding of identification issues and provided me with a getting started, first look at non-parametric regression.

Great introduction to nonparametric estimation.

This book is a nonparametric introduction written for social sciences students. This implies that it's light on the mathmetical side. But the nonparametrics are easy to understand anyway. This is a highly recommended book for those who want to formalize their thoughts and want to test that model with real life data but find it difficult to apply classical parametric methods.

Solid, but not as current or comprehensive as one would like

For a compilation of logos, it was a definitely an adequate effort, just logos, their designers, the agencies and the project for which it was used. What I had found lacking was a larger introduction; it was essentially a couple of pages, and that was it. I did not mind that the largest single designer featured was by the author, but what was dissapointing was for the most part, how ordinary they looked. There were a few wonderful exceptions that demonstrated a marked regional (non-Western) flavor, but for the most part, Bauhaus ruled. Another problem occurs in the publishing date of the book. Although published recently, for the greatest part, the book is actually a reprint from the early 90's, hardly a reflection of current trends in India. I love logo compilations, but I'd prefer something more current, and with more explanation, such as you might find in the trade magazines.
