Very good book for a self-learner

A nice book for a self-learner, provided one is reading really carefully (there are very important issues explained only once and then briefly in this book, and for that I took one star down) and works hard through the book. One will do well though to either hire a teacher at some point, or at least to record oneself playing on a video and show the recording to some knowledgeable folks on the net (there are plenty of guitar forums with people willing to help).

The book comes with a CD that contains some of the songs in the book, so that one can play duets, accompanied by the CD. This is a nice touch, since it teaches you to play along and to interact (something usually lacking when teaching oneself). Parts 2 and 3 of this book are also accompanied by a matching "repertoire" book, with lovely music to play for practice and fun.

A Modern Approach to Classical Guitar Book 1

I know Charles Duncan personally and he is an incredible classical guitarist and over-all musician. I teach classical guitar using, "A Modern Approach to Classical Guitar Book 1" as the first book for all of my beginning students whether they are adults or children. It is not specifically written for children, but a smart 7 year old can do as well as a 50 year old with this book. The larger print music notation helps in learning to read music, and the songs selected are very good at helping the beginning guitar student to use her/his fingers properly. It includes a very easy to understand "basics" of musical notation, and also has quizzes to find areas that might need reviewing. This book progresses smoothly at a moderate rate, unlike many other beginning method books which move the beginning student too quickly to more advanced material before they are ready. After successfully learning all the material in this book, you will be ready to move on either to his book 2, or another more advanced method book.

Also, if you use this book in conjunction with a qualified teacher, you WILL learn to play classical guitar!

this book has been a very helpful guide in my beginning efforts to learn to play the guitar. i didn't get the CD's that go along with the book, but the book is laid out so well and the instructions are quite clear and easy to follow.

Alan G. Gross is a professor of rhetoric at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. He is the author of "The Rhetoric of Science "and "Starring the Text: The Place of Rhetoric in Science Studies. "He is co-editor of "Rhetorical Hermeneutics: Invention and Interpretation in the Age of Science "and "The Scientific Literature: A Guided Tour."

Good synopsis of a major 20th Century rhetorical theory

Chaim Perelman was a European philosopher who made major contributions to rhetorical theory and the theory of justice. This book provides an informative synopsis and thoughtful interpretation of his rhetorical theory. Although the authors focus primarily on Chaim Perelman's treatise The New Rhetoric, they also discuss the relationship between Chaim Perelman's rhetorical theory and his writings about non-rhetorical, philosophical matters.

The first chapter sets forth a summary of Chaim Perelman's life and his intellectual influence. The second chapter discusses the philosophic foundations of Chaim Perelman's rhetorical theory. The remaining eight chapters explore his rhetorical theory by: (1) identifying and describing various elements of his rhetorical theory; (2) showing how those different elements are related and interact; (3) discussing various criticisms of his rhetorical theory; (4) exploring how his rhetorical theory has implications for various disciplines, including philosophy, politics, and science; and (5) noting some of the limitations of his rhetorical theory. In addition to using examples from the writings of Chaim Perelman and discussing the views of other scholars, the authors illustrate their observations, contentions, and arguments about rhetoric with examples from a wide range of sources, including: the Bible; Plato's writings; a play by Shakespeare; Rene Descartes' philosophical writings; the speeches and writings of Abraham Lincoln; General Douglas McArthur's arguments for the Inchon landing; remarks by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and passages from various scientific articles and treatises.

This is not a book for casual reading, nor an introductory-level book on rhetoric. The observations, contentions, and arguments of the authors will be better understood and more readily followed if the reader has some knowledge of, or experience with, philosophy, classical and modern rhetoric, and argumentation theory.

Mostly harmless

An interesting read, but for the most part a harried chronicling of people and trends (mostly people) in a hyper dynamic space. A lot of Nobel laureate name dropping (to which, to their credit, they admit!). Has the feel of someone trying to get a book out there to take advantage of the thirst for new insight. Some good brain candy.

Would have expected a better "primer" on how block chain actually works. Given the audience this tome appears aimed at, a few paragraphs ("How this worldwide ledger works") seems a bit under-serving - particularly for such an avowedly history-changing paradigm. Readers must understand this thing before trusting it, which for the most part is mysterious and geeky. Demystification would help move blockchain out of the comfort zone of PhD's into the realm of the mere unwashed (in which this reviewer sits). And nothing on the mystery surrounding Satoshi himself - what's up with that? Given that we're dealing with a new trust paradigm, doesn't the fact of his anonymity (existence?) not at least merit some comment?

Only part I would recommend is found at Chapter 10 "Showstopper issues"... Ironic, of course but best analysis is here!

Don and Alex Tapscott believe that the blockchain will have a greater impact on our lives than any other technology that exists today. Considering the activity in mobile, big data, virtual reality and artificial intelligence, that’s an extraordinary belief. The Tapscotts’ book, “Blockchain Revolution,” is a great introduction to the blockchain and where it may take us. The father-son team assert that today’s Silicon Valley disrupters, such as Airbnb and Uber, are vulnerable to being disrupted themselves by blockchain-based business models.

Things I Liked: Authors' credibility, show-stoppers chapter and good examples

Nitpicks: No detailed technical description of how the blockchain workds. Other than the show-stoppers chapter, the book could get a little too techno-utopian at times.

Recommendation: This book is a great introduction to the blockchain and how it may impact the world. If you want a technical description, you'll have to look elsewhere. I have a more detailed review on my blog at jamespflynn.com.

This is an attitude-shifting argument that trust is what holds us back. I would like to see more evidence that blockchains are being incorporated into the work of more people and businesses. This might be the next great cultural revolution or it might be wishful thinking. Either way it is worth a read.

Have you encountered a mean girl at work? A mean girl could be someone who seems jealous of your accomplishments, a woman who excludes you from important meetings, a female colleague who puts you down in public, or just someone whose poor work habits constantly get you into trouble. What ever her behavior is, it sets you off – leaving you feeling upset and unable to be your best professional self. Dealing with another woman’s cold or unkind behavior can be challenging, but you don’t have to be held hostage by it. Here are ten tips for WINNING with any mean girl at work:

1. Don’t take her bait – When a mean girl attacks, she’s looking for a reaction from you. If she attacks you in a meeting, she’ll want to see you angry or crying or otherwise upset. Getting a reaction from you gratifies the mean side of her.

2. Don’t believe that what she says is true – This rule is especially important when dealing with a mean girl who likes to gossip and spread rumors. If she comes to you with gossip, don’t get drawn in.

3. Don’t engage in negative speak about her –Why? Because you’re fueling the power struggle between the two of you. And you may end up looking like the pettier person.

4. Be friendly without being friends –If you discover that one of your colleagues acts in ways you don’t like, you don’t have to shut her out. Rather, you can maintain a cordial relationship with her where you only discuss the work at hand.

5. Aim for professional behavior at all times – We call this taking the High Road. Acting professional towards all women in your workplace – regardless of how you feel about them – is a key component of “winning” with mean girls.

6. Keep communication short and to the point –Aim for short, focused interactions with this woman where you only discuss essential work-related topics. Think, ‘Proper inter-office communication – no more, no less.”

7. Find a safe person to confide in – It’s best to find a confidante outside of the office setting who can hear your story and offer solid advice.

8. Don’t roll your eyes when she speaks –Rolling your eyes conveys impatience and irritation with what the other woman is saying. Check yourself to make sure you don’t do that or engage in other forms of non-verbal attacking.

9. Don’t avoid her – In an attempt to limit your exposure to the mean girl’s barbs, you may want to hide whenever you see her or find ways to minimize any contact with her. But if you avoid her, she’ll know that you fear her – and that puts you in a more vulnerable position.

10. Don’t take anything she says or does personally – this is the ultimate lesson when dealing with a mean girl. Whatever she’s doing, it’s not about you – even though her taunts have your name on them. Mean girls generally have poor self-esteem and are easily threatened. You aren’t the first person she’s mean to, and you won’t be the last.

The Female Office Predator

Every working woman needs to read this book. Unfortunately, today the business world is more competitive and to survive, one needs some sound advice, particularly when working with women. I was old school and was not prepared for the animosity towards older workers. Also, there is a new trend of meanness today. Let me state though, I have worked with many tough-minded and exceptionally smart women. It Is always one or two that create problems and also connect with some that are not completely happy and then they proceed to make a person's life so miserable that they quit. That is their intent. I did not quit. I learned. You will also find that these particular women do not do very much work and push off as much as they can to other workers.

This book is exceptionally well written in that the mean girl action is identified, what she does, how it makes you feel, and what you do to handle the situation.

good insight and how to's for women

Filled with all sorts of examples and short anecdotes, this book is a well written guide for taking on those less than friendly girls in the workplace. From those passive aggressive remarks to more brave undercutting, several behavior types are organized and explained. Suggestions for dealing with each are clearly instructed. A short example is given lastly. They are all very practical though putting them into action on the spot will take some practice if, like myself, you are less than assertive.

What I took from this book, as a whole, is to know it is them. It isn't you. Generally, the best way to handle meanies is to ignore them. This advice, along with some other tactics, are discussed and demonstrated.

Pretty good book, but the kindle version is devoid of photos and maps

The text info appears to be good, and the numbering system is consistent with the dive map that I have. Apparently the paper copy has lots of photos in it, so I was disappointed to find that the kindle version had none. It really needs to incorporate a map at the least.

Nice coverage of the dive sites on this wonderful island

Well laid out and covers most of the best dive sites on the island. The author's write-ups reveal his passion for corals and sponges so the fish life at each spot are not as thoroughly covered. I like to read up on places before I go and this helped a great deal. However, if you're not as compulsive as I am, there are loads of brochures and guides you can pick up for free once you're there. They don't have quite the same detail but then again...they're free.

Hunky Vincent Spunky Jinny= love, laughter, romance, smexy lovin and tons of fun. Let's not forget the BFF Dean of my stars what a goof ball. The "moms and dads" just classic. For a short read it had it all. The HEA was PERFECT.....*sigh*

You only hurt the one you love. I laughed very hard at some of the antics and it reminded me a little of my family, God help me. Let's just say family meals can be interesting. There is a lot of shut your pie-hole, and other things I refuse to discuss in a public forum such as these reviews. Although my daughter can still make her brothers cry when she hits them and they are all adults, (all over 6' the brothers that is) God help me. I just don't know where they get it from, (I also have some swampland in Florida you might be interested in too.)

gorgeous book with four charming stories about a little polar bear, Lars

This is a beautiful, delightfully illustrated book containing four well-written adventure stories in which a little polar bear embarks on a new adventure, makes new friends, and eventually finds his way back home. The book is about adventure, friendship, and family. It's very sweet. The stories are fairly substantive -- just about right to read to a four or five year old. I think they're a little too complicated for younger children. The stories are not written for true beginning readers, but are suitable for 7-8 year olds to read.

The first story is about Lars, a little polar bear, who goes out on a trip with his father, gets lost, and ends up on a tropical island, where he makes friends with a hippo and other island inhabitants. In the second story, Lars climbs onto a cargo ship, ends up in a port city, and befriends a harbor cat who helps him hitch a ride back to the Arctic. In the third story, Lars is again en route to a large city. He befriends a walrus, and the two animals make their way back to the Arctic. In the fourth story, Lars becomes friends with an Arctic hare. The pair finds its way to an Arctic research station and falls into a room full of scientific equipment. They eventually escape the research station and make their way back home.

These stories are interesting, a little offbeat, sweet, and fun to read. I highly recommend this book as a nice addition to your library.

Charming stories about Lars, the little polar bear

"The Adventures of Little Polar Bear" contains four stories about Lars, the little polar bear cub who lives with his parents at the North Pole. Lars is a precocious bear and tends to find himself straying far from home, and going off on adventures, only to find his way home again at the end. This collection contains four tales, i.e. Little Polar Bear [where Lars gets separated from his dad and end up in the tropics], Ahoy There,Little Polar Bear [Lars accidentally gets caught in a fishing net and journeys aboard a trawler], Little Polar Bear Finds a Friend [Lars meets a brown bear cub, Bea, and the two become good friends], and Little Polar Bear and the Brave Little Hare [Lars rescues a young hare, and when Lars ends up in a pickle, it's up to Hugo the hare to help him in turn].

The stories make for great reading aloud, and the full-color illustrations enhance the story. Excellent reading choice for ages 4-8.
