This book is a rendering in English of the Tamil epics ‘Silappadikaram’ and ‘Manimekalai’ written by renowned Tamil poets. Silappadikaram is the story of Kovalan and Kannagi and of how Kannagi avenges the wrong done to her husband. Manimekalai is meant to be a sequel to Silappadikaram, being the story of Kovalan’s daughter’s renunciation. There are strong spiritual undertones in the story that give an insight into the religious influence of those times. The illustrations are by A V Illango who is a well-known name in the Indian art scene. His areas of interest are Tamil folklore and the mythology and temple architecture of Tamil Nadu.

Label this travesty as anything other than the 'Silappadikaram' and it's a passable read

Mythology and classical literature is an extremely delicate subject, especially when the book in question is one as traditional and singular as the 'Silappadikaram'. The Silappadikaram, one must remember, is a poem -- a poem in thirty cantos written over two thousand years ago (or so estimated). Therefore, there are marked differences between the writing then and what most readers are accustomed to today. Lakshmi Hagstrom has made an attempt through her 'Illustrated Classic' to bring the modern reader up to speed on this vernacular classic of the Tamils. However, this is all it remains, a very poor attempt. Here are the problems:
1. This is primarily a re-imagining of the Lay of the Anklet, which should have been mentioned very clearly by the author. Thus,
2. There are ideas inserted throughout this books that are completely absent from the original and complete figments of the author's imagination. For example, "Masattuvan came of a proud line of sea-farers."; "He teased her constantly too, partly because she was solemn by nature..." (Kovalan thinks this about Kannaki); "...Kovalan's mother shook her head and said, `He will never grow up.'" These are at random and from the first two cantos. For any new reader to the Silappadikaram, please be warned: most of what you will find in this 'interpretation' is absent from the original.
3. I might be a little pedantic here, but there is certain cadence, a rhythm to poetry. Especially in a classic like this, which is one poem, a writer or translator must endeavour to maintain a certain loyalty to the original. The author here has completely ignored this fact. This is inimical to the original composition and message of the original.
I do wish that I could request the publisher of this title to re-title this to "The Silappadikaram re-imagined" or something to that effect. Since I cannot, all I can do is warn you, the reader, to take heed: there are two far, far superior English language translations out there, by Mr. R Parthasarathy and Mr. Alain Danielou.

Good to look back into how people can talk to Gods and how gods was helping people. Most of all how Our own karma will follow us even after death. Most of us know Kovalan and Kanagi and Madavi but not very clearly what really happened, etc., Also Tamil people followed Buddhism especially Madhavi and Manimegalai after Kovalan's death.
