You cannot fail to be moved and humbled by this book
By D. Kelly
I wasn't sure what to expect at first from this book, after all we probably all watched the news on that fateful day.

It didn't come out quite as I expected, and I found it to be a much more personal and inward looking view of the life of this modest and extremely professional pilot, almost spiritual in some ways. It goes into some depth about his personal family life, sometime so much that you feel almost embarrassed to be reading such person thoughts and details.

There is a huge overriding theme of professionalism, love of flying and respect of the flying gods who decide ultimately who survives and who does not. I feel humbled by his modesty and openness and sometimes feared for the safety of his marriage given the amount of time spent away, but ultimately the amazing bond between Sully and his wife and children shone through, even in the toughest times which were actually after the accident. What I never expected from this book is that it really made me look inwards at my own relationship with own my wife and children and examine my own professional and private life, to see where I could be a better person.

Sully himself said that he doesn't consider himself to be a hero, and I have to say I agree, with the greatest of respect. He was thrown into a situation not of his own choosing, with no alternative, and no option to choose to do nothing. He had no choice but to bring all of his years of training and experience to bear to try and save his own skin and those he was responsible for that day. It is an automatic reaction and I am sure that any pilot would have tried just as hard. Not all would have made the right decision as to where to go, picked the right speeds or flap settings or even remained in control, which could have changed the outcome completely, but all would have been just as much a hero for trying. Sully is a consummate professional in his business, and I doff my cap to his abilities.

This is no self-indulgent book solely about Sully, in fact it is often self-deprecating as he reflects on his own weaknesses and limitations. He goes to great length to re-iterate that it was a team effort, so the rest of the members of the crew are not forgotten, and the support of his wife both before and after clearly contribute greatly to the making of the man.

If you read this you cannot fail to be moved and humbled and to think, "I want Sully on my next flight".

Ultimate "airport" book.
By Lance B. Hillsinger
Sully it the ultimate airport book. An airport book is something that is easy to read in the not-so-ideal locations of an airport lounge or on a bumpy plane ride. Airport books need to be clearly written and easy-to-read, but not boring; after all flying and waiting to fly are boring enough already.
.
One might suspect, that as flight 1549 lasted less than five minutes, trying to “milk” those five minutes into a full-length book would result in a repetitive, tedious manuscript full of minutiae. While there is some minutiae, it is largely confined to the two appendices and not in the narrative proper.

In Sully, the book, there is the obligatory biography of the author himself. How he learned to fly, his career in the Air Force etc., but the biography is more than just about and is surprisingly personal. Besides intimate family details, the reader learns much about the airline industry, how flight 1549 touched the lives of those not even directly related to the flight, and, most importantly, important details of the flight that were missed or reportedly inaccurately by the media.

Sully was originally published under the title “Highest Duty.” It was renamed (presumably) to help market the movie “Sully.” While the new title is more accurate, had “Sully” been used as the original title it would have been perceived as self-serving and Captain Sully is better than that.

I picked this book at the airport and finished before I landed. I had a smooth, on-time flight; may you have a similar experience.

Much more than just a safe landing
By R. Roderick Rowe
This biography of a singular event in the United States consciousness doesn't just tell of the event on that fateful day. Much more importantly, it delves into a lifetime of details that all contributed to the successful outcome. Sully doesn't mince words when it comes to sharing things that should have been set up differently by his employer. When they put materially deficient products into the cockpit, Sully tells us what the cost in convenience, confusion and time wasted as a result was. He tells of the many doubts he experienced after the safe landing. He tells about how his experience in landing safely catalyzed people around him, people who he never met, people who found new hope in an amazingly successful result when the most likely outcome should have been disastrous. The only thing that seemed 'off' was the sheer volume of content that seemed unrelated to the story and the outcome. This book is well worth the time to read. Inspirational would be the one word descriptor.

The book is designed as a study guide for the CWTS and is exactly that.
The subject is covered well with good end of chapter questions that mimic some of the prep tests I have taken.

Great study guide, though becoming a tad dated
By The Rocket Scientist
This is a fabulous study guide, one of the better in the IT world. It is straightforward and easy to understand. Using this guide alone as my only study tool, I scored 92% on the certification exam. This book made it so easy. The review questions presented in this guide are representative of those on the exam, and all test questions are covered in here. Diagrams are easy to follow and make the point effectively. I also like that the author occasionally goes into extra detail, and wants to share his knowledge, providing background relevant information and explanation, but clarifies whether such is covered on the exam. My only complaint about this guide is that it is becoming slightly dated, and does not address upcoming standards of equipment, such as 802.11ac and beyond, which are already on the market.

Good study guide for the exam
By Zeb
Used this book to pass the PW0-071 Certified Wireless Technology Specialist exam.

Be sure to download the practice tests as they aren't included in a CD with the book, you have to get them from www.sybex.com/go/cwts2e (it's in the product description). I skipped most of the vendor specific training segments in the book since the exam itself is vendor neutral.

Very broad overview of wireless networking. Good foundation for the more detailed and complex CWNA exam.

A Short History of Nearly Everything, by Bill Bryson

One of the world’s most beloved writers and bestselling author of One Summer takes his ultimate journey—into the most intriguing and intractable questions that science seeks to answer.

In A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson trekked the Appalachian Trail—well, most of it. In A Sunburned Country, he confronted some of the most lethal wildlife Australia has to offer. Now, in his biggest book, he confronts his greatest challenge: to understand—and, if possible, answer—the oldest, biggest questions we have posed about the universe and ourselves. Taking as territory everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, Bryson seeks to understand how we got from there being nothing at all to there being us. To that end, he has attached himself to a host of the world’s most advanced (and often obsessed) archaeologists, anthropologists, and mathematicians, travelling to their offices, laboratories, and field camps. He has read (or tried to read) their books, pestered them with questions, apprenticed himself to their powerful minds. A Short History of Nearly Everything is the record of this quest, and it is a sometimes profound, sometimes funny, and always supremely clear and entertaining adventure in the realms of human knowledge, as only Bill Bryson can render it. Science has never been more involving or entertaining.

Amazon.com Review
From primordial nothingness to this very moment, A Short History of Nearly Everything reports what happened and how humans figured it out. To accomplish this daunting literary task, Bill Bryson uses hundreds of sources, from popular science books to interviews with luminaries in various fields. His aim is to help people like him, who rejected stale school textbooks and dry explanations, to appreciate how we have used science to understand the smallest particles and the unimaginably vast expanses of space. With his distinctive prose style and wit, Bryson succeeds admirably. Though A Short History clocks in at a daunting 500-plus pages and covers the same material as every science book before it, it reads something like a particularly detailed novel (albeit without a plot). Each longish chapter is devoted to a topic like the age of our planet or how cells work, and these chapters are grouped into larger sections such as "The Size of the Earth" and "Life Itself." Bryson chats with experts like Richard Fortey (author of Life and Trilobite) and these interviews are charming. But it's when Bryson dives into some of science's best and most embarrassing fights--Cope vs. Marsh, Conway Morris vs. Gould--that he finds literary gold. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
As the title suggests, bestselling author Bryson (In a Sunburned Country) sets out to put his irrepressible stamp on all things under the sun. As he states at the outset, this is a book about life, the universe and everything, from the Big Bang to the ascendancy of Homo sapiens. "This is a book about how it happened," the author writes. "In particular how we went from there being nothing at all to there being something, and then how a little of that something turned into us, and also what happened in between and since." What follows is a brick of a volume summarizing moments both great and curious in the history of science, covering already well-trod territory in the fields of cosmology, astronomy, paleontology, geology, chemistry, physics and so on. Bryson relies on some of the best material in the history of science to have come out in recent years. This is great for Bryson fans, who can encounter this material in its barest essence with the bonus of having it served up in Bryson's distinctive voice. But readers in the field will already have studied this information more in-depth in the originals and may find themselves questioning the point of a breakneck tour of the sciences that contributes nothing novel. Nevertheless, to read Bryson is to travel with a memoirist gifted with wry observation and keen insight that shed new light on things we mistake for commonplace. To accompany the author as he travels with the likes of Charles Darwin on the Beagle, Albert Einstein or Isaac Newton is a trip worth taking for most readers.

From Booklist
Confessing to an aversion to science dating to his 1950s school days, Bryson here writes for those of like mind, perhaps out of guilt about his lack of literacy on the subject. Bryson reports he has been doing penance by reading popular-science literature published in the past decade or two, and buttonholing a few science authors, such as Richard Fortey (Trilobite! Eyewitness to Evolution, 2000). The authors Bryson talks to are invariably enthusiasts who, despite their eminence, never look on his questions as silly but, rather, view them as welcome indicators of interest and curiosity. Making science less intimidating is Bryson's essential selling point as he explores an atom; a cell; light; the age and fate of the earth; the origin of human beings. Bryson's organization is historical and his prose heavy on humanizing anecdotes about the pioneers of physics, chemistry, geology, biology, evolution and paleontology, or cosmology. To those acquainted with the popular-science writing Bryson has digested, his repackaging is a trip down memory lane, but to his fellow science-phobes, Bryson' s tour has the same eye-opening quality to wonder and amazement as his wildly popular travelogues. All that stuff we were supposed to have learned, but ...
By David C. Hay
I am a big fan of Bill Bryson's travelogues. I was therefore surprised when I cam across this, somewhat more weighty, tome. But I am pleased that I picked it up.
The author says he didn't do very well in science when he was in school because the teachers and texts seemed to be hiding all the good stuff. Now, as an adult, he's gone after the good stuff. And he's the guy to write it so the rest of us can understand. Not only does he write clearly, but he's very good at explaining as much as a normal person can understand (of relativity, for example), while pointing to the stuff that's weird, and setting aside the stuff that you have to be a specialist to understand.
He also is very good at giving credit to people who thought of things but were ignored until someone else came along and took credit. This has happened all too frequently, and it's good for the record to be set straight.
If you too were afraid of science, this is a wonderful book. If you already know a lot of this but just like to read enjoyable writing--it's also a wonderful book.

Not Dumbed down. Gets you very excited about science.
By Trip
This book is the type of book that would inspire you to become a biologist or a geologist or an astronomer. From this book you are able to see bits and pieces of famous scientists lives and get a feeling by the end that its not all fun and games but at the same time it soooo very worth it to dedicate your life to the pursuit of furthering the knowledge of your fellow human beings and in some small way pushing our species in a positive direction. From reading this book you find out how all the knowledge from hundreds of years ago has become the basis of where we are today. This is conveyed extremely well to the audience. The other thing which is conveyed so very well is the power and destructive force of mother nature here on earth and in space. Parts of this book read better than seeing an end of the world movie because the author is so good at getting a vivid picture drawn in the reader's minds eye.
This book is so good and so comprehensive I can see myself reading this over again.
Thank you Bill Bryson for your hard, extensive research! Quite remarkable.

Not quite everything, but enough...
By FrKurt Messick
I was first acquainted with Bill Bryson through his works on the English language and various travelogue types of books. In these books he proved to be an entertaining writer, witty and interesting, with just the right amount of I'm-not-taking-myself-too-seriously attitude to make for genuinely pleasurable reading. Other books of his, 'Notes from a Small Island' and 'The Mother Tongue', are ones I return to again and again. His latest book, one of the longer ones (I was surprised, as most Bryson books rarely exceed 300 pages, and this one weighs in well past 500), is one likely to join those ranks.

Of course, a history of everything, even a SHORT history of NEARLY everything, has got to be fairly long. Bryson begins, logically enough, at the beginning, or at least the beginning as best science can determine. Bryson weaves the story of science together with a gentle description of the science involved - he looks not only at the earliest constructs of the universe (such as the background radiation) but also at those who discover the constructs (such as Penzias and Wilson).

A great example of the way Bryson weaves the history of science into the description of science, in a sense showing the way the world changes as our perceptions of how it exists change, is his description of the formulation, rejection, and final acceptance of the Pangaea theory. He looks at figures such as Wegener (the German meteorologist - 'weatherman', as Bryson describes him) who pushed forward the theory in the face of daunting scientific rejection that the continents did indeed move, and that similarities in flora and fauna, as well as rock formations and other geological and geographical aspects, can be traced back to a unified continent. Bryson with gentle humour discusses the attitudes of scientists, as they shifted not quite as slowly as the continents, towards accepting this theory, making gentle jabs along the way (Einstein even wrote a foreword to a book that was rather scathing toward the idea of plate tectonics - brilliance is no guarantee against being absolutely wrong).

Bryson traces the development of the universe and the world from the earliest universe to the formation of the planet, to the growing diversity of life forms to development of human beings and human society. Inspired by Natural History (the short history refers more to natural history than anything else), this traces the path to us and possible futures. Bryson juxtaposes the creation of the Principia by Isaac Newton with the extinction of the dodo bird - stating that the word contained divinity and felony in the nature of humanity, the same species that can rise to the heights of understanding in the universe can also, for no apparent reason, cause the extinction of hapless and harmless fellow creatures on earth. Are humans, in Bryson's words, 'inherently bad news for other living things'? He recounts many of the truly staggering follies of species-hunting, particularly in the nineteenth century, calling upon people to take far more care of the planet with which we have been entrusted, either through design or fate.

Bryson's take on things is innovative and his narrative is interesting, but there is a point to it, just as there is with most of his writing. He writes not merely to entertain, or to inform, but to persuade. Bryson is intrigued by science, having a joy that comes across the page of someone who essentially did not know or understand a lot of the background of science and how it worked in the world until recently, and now wants to share that joy with everyone! He definitely has points to argue - for starters, the need for open-mindedness, even among (perhaps particularly among) those who are supposed to have the open and searching intellects, the scientists themselves. He also wishes others to know more about science, professionals and laypersons, and more about our own origins as a people, both in terms of where we've come from, and how we've come to know about it.

This is a new version of his already-published text, this time with graphics, paintings, pictures, maps and other things that make the history come alive in new and interesting ways. This is a good revision, adding quite a bit to Bryson's already interesting text. Unique among Bryson's writing in many ways, this is in some ways a travelogue through geology, paleontology, cosmology and evolution. A fun and fascinating read!

Level-headed...diligent, provocative and fascinating. The book is the most complete of its kind ever written. TIME Sanity on the subject of sex is all too rare; wit is in even shorter supply; and an engaging style is about as commonplace as eyebrows on an egg. Three cheers therefore, for Reay Tannahill. WASHINGTON POST A shatteringly wide-ranging survey. SUNDAY TIMES

Not a "dirty" book or "sex" book
By Jinx L. Heath Finch
The title of this book would make some think that they would be reading about sex, sex techniques, etc. throughout history, but the book is more about our beliefs, mores, and knowledge about reproduction throughout the ages. Not a boring or hard read. Moves along quickly and held my interest throughout. This is the second copy of this book I have bought as my original copy was stolen out of my house by some visitor. Friends who have seen this in my bookcase want to borrow it and all who have read it told me they enjoyed it greatly.

Terribly inaccurate
By shane
Having only read the first few pages of the book, the author has already claimed that women can only be raped from the front(wtf?), that the only other animal to commit rape is a particular species of spider, and that men's minds are genetically more adept at "technological advance and discovery". I could understand if the book had been written 100 years ago instead of 30. I'm a little scared that so many people have given this book good reviews...

Understanding Human Dignity (Proceedings of the British Academy), by Christopher McCrudden

Understanding Human Dignity aims to help the reader make sense of current debates about the meaning and implications of the idea of human dignity, a concept that has probably never been so omnipresent in everyday speech, or so deeply embedded in political and legal discourse. In many of the central debates of our time (such as those concerning torture, abortion, same-sex marriage, global justice, human rights, and welfare reform), appeals to dignity are prominently on display. The concept of dignity is not only a frequent feature of political debate, but also, and increasingly, of legal argument. Indeed, courts tell us that human dignity is the foundation of all human rights. But the more important it is, the more contested it seems to have become. There has, as a result, been an extraordinary explosion of recent scholarly writing about the concept of human dignity. This book aims to reflect on current debates about human dignity in law, philosophy, history, politics, and theology, through a series of original essays from specialists in these fields, exploring this contested concept in its full richness and complexity.

Review
The genesis of this truly remarkable collection of essays and papers ... [draws] together a stellar, multidisciplinary group including historians, legal academics, judges, political scientists, theologians and philosophers, to discuss the concept of human dignity from their various disciplinary perspectives ... It is that interdisciplinary flavour which gives the book its greatest strength David Turner, QC, Ecclesiastical Law Journal Understanding Human Dignity is a highly recommendable transdisciplinary book, which provides both a good overview and in depth analysis of contemporary debates about dignity. What makes it particularly valuable and enriching is the constant dialogue between theory and practice in mutually illuminating ways, where conceptual analyses of various ways of grounding and approaching dignity interact with analyses of a rich variety of concrete material from law cases or historical cases.
