A real-world guide to becoming a top-performing equity analyst

Praise for Best Practices for Equity Research Analysts:

"Jim Valentine has taken his decades of experience as a highly successful security analyst and written an effective and comprehensive guide to doing the job right. I only wish I had this book by my side throughout my career." -- Byron R. Wien, Vice Chairman, Blackstone Advisory Partners LP

"Given the fast pace and high-pressure nature of the markets, analysts don't have the luxury to make mistakes. James J. Valentine's Best Practices for Equity Research Analysts should be required reading for all new and experienced analysts, particularly those who were not lucky enough to be brought up in the business under a mentor. Valentine can be that mentor." -- Jami Rubin, Managing Director, Global Investment Research, Goldman Sachs

"Jim's book is an excellent window into the world of securities research. Very few works cover the complete life cycle of an analyst and the necessary balance between theory and practice. This is one of them." -- Juan-Luis Perez, Global Director of Research, Morgan Stanley

"Valentine's book doesn’t rehash the basics of finance but covers all the nonacademic topics in terms of how the analysts should manage their time, resources, data, and contacts in order to come up with the best stock picks. This book is required reading for beginning analysts and a must-read for all analysts who want to develop an edge." -- Carl Schweser, Founder of Schweser’s Study Program for the CFA Exam

"Best Practices for Equity Research Analysts is by far the best written and most comprehensive book that I have read on how to become a top-notch analyst. I shouldn't be surprised; it was written by one of the best analysts that Wall Street has ever seen. Every securities firm should require their analysts to read this book." -- Eli Salzmann, Portfolio Manager

Most equity research analysts learn their trade on the job by apprenticing under a senior analyst. However, equity analysts who work for senior producers often have little time or incentive to train new hires, and those who do have the time may not have research skills worth emulating.

Now, Best Practices for Equity Research Analysts offers promising equity research analysts a practical curriculum for mastering their profession. James J. Valentine, a former Morgan Stanley analyst, explains everything today's competitive analyst needs to know, providing practical training materials for buyand sell-side research analysis in the United States and globally.

Conveniently organized for use as a learning tool and everyday reference on the job, Best Practices for Equity Research Analysts covers the five primary areas of the equity research analyst's role:

  • Identifying and monitoring critical factors
  • Creating and updating financial forecasts
  • Deriving price targets or a range of targets
  • Making stock recommendations
  • Communicating stock ideas

Expanding upon material covered in undergraduate courses but written specifically to help you perform in the real world, this authoritative book gives you access to the wisdom and expertise of leading professionals in the field. You'll learn best practices for setting up an information hub, influencing others, identifying the critical factors and information sources for better forecasting, creating a better set of financial forecast scenarios, improving valuation and stock-picking techniques, communicating your message effectively, making ethical decisions, and more.

Without Best Practices for Equity Research Analysts, you're just treading water in the sink-or-swim world of the equity analyst.

Another Book Review from The Aleph Blog
By David Merkel
My friend Tom Brakke, liked this book and said I would too. He was right, and soon afterward, I heard the author speak at the Baltimore CFA Society. Hearing James Valentine speak is an advantage here. He summarized what is most important, which if you are reading the book, it would be chapter 20 (out of 27). It is his FaVeS framework: Forecast, Valuation, and Sentiment, in that order of importance. Remember that as a key to the book if you read it; it tells you what to focus on as an analyst.

Another key, since the book is long, is to look at the shaded summaries which are usually at the back of each chapter. If stretched for time, read those first, and then read the chapter if you didn't get it.

This book aims to focus analysts on information that matters. Aim for information that makes a difference, and that few others have. Create an information web that maximizes the value of your time, and creates value for your research.

This book covers both the buy-side and the sell-side, telling each how to best use the other side. As a former buy-side analyst, to me it means fewer analyses, and better analyses. Aside from that, it is a game: buy-side: identify the better sell-side analysts and listen to them. Sell-side: identify clients that will generate commissions and market their best insights to them.

Regardless, analysts must identify the few factors that account for 80% of the performance in a given industry, and focus on those intensely. It helps to get into the industry organizations, which can help drive insight into the industry as a whole, and provide a backdrop for questions to ask when talking with executives in the industry.

Learning this will give an analyst a leg up on other analysts. Analysts should also understand the basic accounting structures of their industry so that they can identify companies that are not playing fair -- over-reporting income. I would add don't get negative too quickly. Frauds can develop a momentum of their own. Wait until the fraud gets large relative to the size of the industry before issuing a sell call -- wait for price momentum to go to zero. (Note: for investigative journalists, this does not apply. Jump on early, so that you can say that you warned everyone.)

Basic forensic accounting skills help, as do modeling skills, and basic statistical skills. I was surprised to learn a bunch of Excel shortcuts that I haven't seen elsewhere, and I have used Excel for nineteen years at a high level. The summary of accounting deviations is cogent, as well as pointing readers to Mulford and Schilit.

One idea that I heartily agree with: set up your spreadsheets to differentiate data and formulas. Cells with data series should only contain data. Formulas should have no numbers in them, unless they are trivial. This makes analysis a lot easier and cleaner in the long run.

The book also brings out the need to consider multiple scenarios, which help an analyst to flesh out his analysis. Being willing to consider what can go wrong, or right, richens an analysis. Also, the book warns against common pathologies that overcome analysts, notably -- Confirmation bias, overconfidence, Self-Attribution-bias, Optimism, Recency, Momentum, Heuristics, Familiarity, Snakebite (won't go back to one that hurt you), Falling in love, anxiety, over-reaction, loss-aversion, etc. I have experienced a few of those myself, and would have benefited from thinking these through before becoming an analyst.

Quibbles

I would warn any analyst trying to use simple or multiple regression that they are playing with fire, unless they understand the weaknesses of the data, and the limitations of the general linear model. In twelve-plus years working on Wall Street, I never saw regression used right once.

The author seems to favor DCF over multiples. Truth, neither works well, and one must live with the weaknesses of any approach. DCF embeds a lot of assumptions that are known, though some may be wrong -- multiples embed unknown assumptions.

The author does not like price-to-sales. For industrials and utilities I would say look at a chart of price versus price-to-sales. In most cases, they track, because sales don't vary that much in the short run. If you know the high and low P/S ratios for companies in an industry (P/B for financials) you have valuable information. It gives you boundaries to look at in buy and sell decisions.

I would also warn analysts against using Damodaran and those like him. I don't think his models are wrong so much as impractical. I would rather use a simple model that catches 80-90% of the action, versus one that catches 100% of the action, bet cannot practically be calculated.

Who would benefit from this book:

All equity analysts would benefit from this book. It is detailed, and yet practical. Some of our competitors will benefit from it, and if you don't read it, you will wonder why.

A guide for the sell side analyst
By investingbythebooks
This is as far as I know a unique book. It's in essence a number of check lists covering most aspects of the work description of a sell side equity analyst. The book aims to cater to both the buy side analyst and the sell side analyst. In reality it is the later who is in focus. This is no surprise as the author has been a top ranked sector analyst at a number of US investment banks including Morgan Stanley. According to the author the craft of equity research lacks quality control processes. The profession is mostly learnt through on the job training in a kind of mentor-apprentice-system. You might get lucky and have a good mentor, but on the other hand you might not. Valentine's aim with this book is to develop a best practice for the profession.

The book covers a number of topics such as influencing your research coverage, handling relations within you own organisation and with clients, finding insights to include in research, stock valuation and how to best communicate the research done. Valentine is writing a number of lists of things that often is quite intuitive and basic. The list form is hardly the recipe for a colourful writing and as the same advice is repeated in both the check lists and the text surrounding those lists there is a fair amount of repetition.

There is much in this book that irritates me. However the coverage of topics is comprehensive and I would agree that they probably are close to a best practice for the profession. The advice in this book will both be a good guide for a less experienced analyst and it will remind the more seasoned analyst that he perhaps has neglected one or two aspects of what he could do. There is some good advice regarding psychological pitfalls, too few analysts utilize statistical analysis in the way the author suggests which is a shame and there is also a useful discussion around the best way to build financial models for the companies covered by the analyst.

For an investor, outperformance in the stock market is accomplished by either doing something different from others or by acting like most others but being cleverer than they are. This is a best practice for those who have accepted the professional role as it is, i.e. for those who will run with the crowd. The time horizon for the work of a mainstream US sell side equity analyst is one to six months. With a horizon like that, relative stock performance within a sector is driven by changes in company specifics that are not appreciated by consensus and there is a need for near time triggers. The intrinsic value of the stock is less interesting as valuation is slow-acting.

Here instead, value is something relative within the sector covered. First choice for valuation is to assign a pro cyclical single period multiple to the near term estimate. Growth is seen as the primary reason for differences in multiples, notwithstanding that the spread between return of capital and cost of capital is equally important. Many analysts have a deep knowledge of the companies covered but they are simply momentum analysts.

The author's way to try to create alpha, while at the same time doing the same thing as everybody else, is through focus on three to four key variables. This is the best advice of the whole book. There is no chance you can win by knowing more details than other investors on every topic. There is much to gain from understanding what the key issues for the stock are and then dig deeper around these and recognize the rest of the information is non-important noise.

This is a cookbook to produce the short-sightedness of today's Wall Street, but it is also a unique guide for the person working as a sell side analyst. If you are one, or aspire to be one, you really should read it. I would.

Solid material
By Sircornflakes
I thought this book was informative and was a good overview of much of the material on valuation, due diligence, and behavioural finance contained within the CFA curriculum. The author's own experiences surely added more depth to the material.

I would suggest that future editions contain a disc or web access to go into more detail on sections (autocorrelation in residuals, time series, etc..) and provide non analysts with the opportunity to run through exercises.

Or consider exercises on one long valuation throughout the book running from top down, bottom up selection of sector and company. A fictional interview with management, running a history of numbers, forecast earnings..come up with various price multiples..and finally making a recommendation.

I think that would give readers a more interactive experience and help to use those many Excel tricks.

On the whole, I extracted some value from this book.

Getting MEAN with Mongo, Express, Angular, and Node, by Simon Holmes

Summary

Getting MEAN with Mongo, Express, Angular, and Node teaches readers how to develop web applications end-to-end using the MEAN stack. You'll systematically discover each technology in the MEAN stack as you build up an application one layer at a time, just as you'd do in a real project.Purchase of the print book includes a free eBook in PDF, Kindle, and ePub formats from Manning Publications.

About the Technology

Traditional web dev stacks use a different programming language in every layer, resulting in a complex mashup of code and frameworks. Together, the MongoDB database, the Express and AngularJS frameworks, and Node.js constitute the MEAN stack—a powerful platform that uses only one language, top to bottom: JavaScript. Developers and businesses love it because it's scalable and cost-effective. End users love it because the apps created with it are fast and responsive. It's a win-win-win!

About the Book

Getting MEAN with Mongo, Express, Angular, and Node teaches you how to develop web applications using the MEAN stack. First, you'll create the skeleton of a static site in Express and Node, and then push it up to a live web server. Next, you'll add a MongoDB database and build an API before using Angular to handle data manipulation and application logic in the browser. Finally you'll add an authentication system to the application, using the whole stack. When you finish, you'll have all the skills you need to build a dynamic data-driven web application.

What's Inside

  • Full-stack development using JavaScript
  • Responsive web techniques
  • Everything you need to get started with MEAN
  • Best practices for efficiency and reusability

Provides MEAN stack details, explanations and examples I have needed and wanted for a long time
    By Si Dunn
I have built several MEAN stack applications using some of the popular prefabricated frameworks. And I have completed MEAN stack tutorials where the application is built from scratch, so to speak. I am pleased that "Getting MEAN with Mongo, Express, Angular, and Node" takes the latter approach. It starts with Express and Node and shows how to put together a basic static site that is pushed up to a web server. Then, you add a MongoDB database and create an application interface (API). Next, you work with AngularJS to deal with data manipulation and application logic in the browser. Finally, you bring in authentication, so you can register new users and log in returning users of the app you have built. It is both fun and very challenging to make all of these pieces come together correctly and fly.

Like the MEAN stack itself, this excellent how-to book is not suited for impatient people who want to leap right in and start coding. Indeed, you don't start coding in this book until page 53, after reading some important discussions of full-stack development and the MEAN stack architecture.

"Getting MEAN with Mongo, Express, Angular, and Node" provides details, explanations and examples I have needed and wanted for a long time, in one well-written, nicely illustrated volume. This book definitely will be my go-to reference guide as I build (and debug) new MEAN stack single-page applications.

(Special thanks to Manning for providing a review copy.)

Best books on Node but a lot of debugging...
    By Tom
I'm on chapter 10(out of 11 chapters) so I've worked on most of the book.

The book starts out great and has a very intuitive architecture for the projects. As progress further into the book, however, more things begin to not work either because the book uses an older version of a module(which I understand the author can't control after the book is released) or because the instructions in the book are just wrong or things are left out. As you get into the later chapters, there's a lot of debugging you need to do because of these mistakes. Thankfully the book has a git repo that you can clone and check the code with for every chapter.

Overall, this is a great book on learning Node but the mistakes that appear later were time consuming and annoying to fix. Hopefully the author will be releasing a second edition where these things will be fixed.

Interested in full-stack or Node/Angular Development? Buy this book!
    By Paul D.
I originally bought this text through the Manning early access program (MEAP) so I've been working through it for a couple of months now. By far, this text has been the best introductory text to full stack development that I have read. I felt that the author did an excellent job of maintaining focus on the entire MEAN stack and giving a complete overview of the functionality and power of each individual layer.

The book walks you through building a web application with the Express framework, adding database functionality using MongoDB and Mongoose, and developing an API for the web app. It culminates in transforming the entire app to an Angular single page application. Considering the quality and amount of material covered, I consider the book a bargain. I'd strongly recommend this text to developers new to any or all components in the MEAN stack.

The Innkeeper's Son (The Harven Legacy Book 1), by Jeremy Brooks

Before Desirmor came and broke the peace of the Alexidus monarchy with his army of dark beasts, Princess Harmony Alexidus spoke a prophecy of his rise and fall. He would destroy the warriors of the Harven Mountains. He would make the princess his eternally unwilling bride. Then he would wrap the world in a veil of darkness so tight, the people would forget that light ever existed.

But the Harmony Prophecy foretold that a scion of the Alexidus bloodline would find the last descendant of the fabled Harven warriors and guide him to a final clash with King Desirmor.

1000 years have passed. 1000 years of Desirmor's Nine Laws. 1000 years of indentured matrimony for Harmony Alexidus. The world has forgotten the prophecy.

Now, at an inn on a tropical island, Lady Enaya Relador has found the last Harven. But Siminus Kelmor is not a willing hero. He is the nave son of an innkeeper, sheltered all of his life from the horrors indigenous to people on the mainland. And he is broken. Just as she has found him, Sim witnesses the brutal murder of his parents at the hands of King Desirmor's son, the feared Blood Lord. To mold him into the champion promised by the prophecy, Enaya will need to forge him as a blacksmith turns a scrap of iron into a sword. Because if he is to fulfill his destiny and put an end to the 1000 year reign of King Desirmor, Sim will need to become a perfectly crafted weapon. But can she make a weapon out of a man she is falling in love with?

    First 2/3 (5) Final 1/3 (2)
    By W.J.R
Edited Review: I've read the book again and considered my original response. Upon reflection, I believe my original review was overly critical of the overall work based on a few issues and did not reflect the overall excellence of the book. While I still believe a specific antagonist martial ability was elevated to near deity, somewhat heavy handed especially during the "cattle slaughter" and just didn't fit with the "cattle" previous deeds of lore (battles/mountans/ect..). That said, the shortcoming did not warrant a 3 rating of this fine work. As a result, I've modified my rating to 4, with the first 2/3 of the book being a 5 and the last 1/3 being a 2.

    Where to start?

If I had written this review before the final 1/3 of the book it would have been a solid 4. As the book progressed into the final 1/3 I found myself assuming anyone coming in contact with a specific heart eating character was facing a demigod and going to die. The martial prowess of the character in question took all intrigue out of the battle scenes they became rather boring forgone conclusions. Recommendation: Next time a character faces his arch nemesis a supposed near equal in battle AND the legendary battle queen who's wars tore the world asunder, he might want to take a scratch or two. When facing a mythical almost epic race of power and history, you might not want to dispatch them like cattle, it's quite a let down from the build up of their prowess, it felt rushed and overdone, and nothing was gained in the graphic description of their post death evisceration. I realize the "epic" in this type of book comes from facing seemingly insurmountable odds but the prowess of the character in question honestly ruined the last 1/3 of the book. Every time he guessed, he guessed right, every time. There are so many things to love in this book it may seem harsh to complain about this issue but since I assume many more "sub bosses" will come before the final book, I needed to be honest. Let the antagonist suffer a set back or two, face some adversity...not much but enough that there is some sense of suspense before the final chapter. After the build up and subsequent treatment as cattle of the epic beast who tore down mountains, I honestly don't know how you rehabilitate their status. I think a farmers son with a axe might have fared better than 3 great beings of lore.

    Great Read.
    By Matthew D. Herrmann
I enjoyed this book. It was a good value - $3.99 for many pages of entertaining reading.

The worldbuilding was great I really have nothing bad to say about it. I got attached to the characters and there was definite tension throughout the book that kept me reading until the end. I felt like the main characters were pretty toast if things went wrong for them throughout the book. The love subplots were a little slow moving, but that's OK to me.

One criticism that I have of the book would be that I do feel like the main bad guys were mostly characterized by violence in general and therefore seemed somewhat wooden.

    "Who are you?"
    "A VILLAIN!"
"? Why are you a Villain?"
"Because I LIKE TO HURT PEOPLE"
    "-_-"

Same goes with the main bad guy. Why is he a jerk? Just is.

Another criticism that I have of this book is that it uses sexual violence against women as a characterization device. Both in order to define characters as villains and to provide a transition for a character between dirty and accepted. This crutch is common in fantasy literature but I still don't like it. There's a character in the book that has been repeatedly subjected to sexual violence consistently for a long period of time. The character bounces back and moves on unrealistically fast. Sexual violence is a serious thing, and not to be used as part of a redemption story arc. Honestly, if you're going to write about this subject matter.. You'd better be a really good writer and willing to make the characters go through multiple scenes of dialog and emotions. There are other problematic things about his use of this device, but they'd involve talking about specific points in the plot. Bottom line, I don't feel that it was necessary.

Again, this book was interesting to me and I liked it - despite my rather voluminous explanation of the parts that I did not like.

    Great plot, subpar writing
    By Amazon Customer
The book had great potential, a great story, great characters, great overall idea, but it lacked the writing to truly make it wonderful.

There was little to no believable character development throughout the entire book. If a character faced a challenge it was quickly overcome and the character reached an epiphany instantly, no huge questions just "BAM! I understand everything!"

The characters put their hands in a bag of bad cliches and just grabbed one to use. Almost all things said throughout the book were predictable. No real intriguing conversations happened.

The conversations in general were usually bland and left me thinking the characters were childish and did not understand anything of their world.

Often times the author tends to be long winded with his descriptions, where a simple description would do to explain a situation he would use two maybe three times what he would require.

But not all was bad. The story and idea behind the story was a wonderful. Although it felt like the theme was stolen from a handful of other popular stories. A kingdom at peace was overthrown by an evil that ruled the world for a thousand years. One man/boy must save the world with the help of his companions.

In general that is a plot most other stories use, but the world development was, in my opinion, quite well done. I don't want to spoil anything so it is hard to describe this part, but I found that the world was quite intriguing, even if the characters weren't.

The magic system of the book is also something I enjoyed, you never knew what someone could do, not did you know one's limits. Although in the same way that it was good it was also bad, it seems like because anything is possible for the main character, he is nearly invincible. Everything is too easily solved with a flick of the wrist.

Overall, I would give the second book a chance, if not for the writing to see the end of the book. But the priority to read the next in this series of books is low.

    Just lovely!
    By K. Howard
This is quite a lovely journal. I absolutely adore Ms. Basford's coloring books, so I had to pre-order this as soon as I saw it. The cover is very sturdy and beautifully detailed. The edges are gilt and there's a ribbon to mark your place. The pages are off-white and are a decent weight. There are many petite drawings to color; make sure your pencils are very sharp. The only thing I was disappointed in was that the pages are unlined. However, the description doesn't state that it is lined; that was my own assumption. I think this would make a beautiful gift for any lover of Ms. Basford's artwork.

I've taken some pictures, and I apologize for the quality of them. That's what happens when the cat wants to help!

    Just lovely. (Though unlined)
    By Rachel
Beautiful gilded edged journal with pages of a very decent weight. Each page features a unique drawing in the vein of "Secret garden" in the corner. The pages are unlined, unfortunately.

It's a delight to color the small image as I contemplate whatever I'm about to write. It's just lovely; I'm so happy that I pre-ordered this beautiful journal.

It would be a good sketch book
    By Kel
The illustrations are in the corners of each page, very small. Unlined paper. It would make a good sketch book. Has anyone used pigment markers on the pages of this journal? If so, did it bleed through other pages?

Update: I used the pigment markers on the page and it did not bleed through. and the gold trim on the pages does make the book unique.

    Amazon.com Review
Setting Up Shop is designed both for professional craftspeople who often have the poorest and most sparsely equipped shops because they are too busy to make improvements, and for hobbyists and weekend warriors who need a shop for entertainment as much getting work done. Author Sandor Nagyszalanczy does a good job of pointing out the relative benefits and drawbacks to various shop configurations and locations. In fact, one entire page is devoted to a chart comparing shops located in attics, basements, garages, or a spare room in the house, and how each rates for various factors, including noise, dust, headroom, access, structural limitations, heating, cooling, and moisture. This is a great how-to book with very useful topics in each chapter, including upgrading your electrical system; making sure you have the proper lighting, heating, and ventilation for your shop; picking the right tools and brands; deciding where to place machines and tools, benches and work areas; ensuring shop safety; methods for collecting dust; and more.

Each chapter is personalized with a visit to the shop of one craftsperson or another. The journey is made better by more than 240 color photos, as well as a healthy dose of black-and-white photos and line drawings. In the end, of course, the definition of a good or a smart shop is fluid, depending on its primary use and the need to change things from time to time. And both professional and hobbyist woodmakers can have as much pride in their shop as they do in a handmade chair. Nagyszalanczy has worked out of the same shop for nearly 20 years and admits that he takes offense when someone refers to it as a "garage." "You have to follow your heart as well as use your mind," Nagyszalanczy writes, "when transforming a simple building that others might call a shed or a garage into what you proudly call your woodshop." --John Russell

    What a great resource!
    By Scott Pointon
As a library administrator, and avid woodworker, I get to see and read a lot of woodworking and shop building books. This is among the best I have ever read. I even purchased a copy of this one for myself. I was really impressed with all of the common-sense advice for day-to-day problems encountered in any workshop. Many of the other workshop books on the market are either too simplistic, or serve only to showcase famous woodworking shops without detail. This book gives all the nitty-gritty that you will need to set up or rework your dream shop. It definitely helped me.

Many practical ideas for the rich and the not-so-rich
    By John C. Lynch
I have to disagree with the other reviewers that this book only
has info for folks with cash to burn. There are a lot of great
ideas that can be implemented at all sorts of investment levels.
And a number of the shops they feature are not crazy "dream"
shops -- there are several one-car garage and basement shops that
are quite reasonable for any person who is serious enough about
having a shop that they'd actually go to the trouble of buying
a book about setting that shop up. And I also have to say that
this book is much more practical than "The Workshop Book" in the
Taunton Press Workshop Classics series. While I love the latter,
this book has more information about electrical wiring, shop
lay out, bench ideas, and storage. If you are serious about
setting up your first real shop, this is the book you should have,
    period.

    Prevented some mistakes . . .
    By Todd J. Niblo
I have always considered myself to be proficient at getting things organized and not having too many regrets afterward. I work more happily and efficiently when things are properly setup. This book answered several questions that I was considering in reworking my shop/2 car garage. The author provides you with the thought processes not exact layouts or locations for equipment. The author covers the advantages and pitfalls to various shop problems and locations. He effectively covers working with what you already have and does not necessarily recommend building a shop from the ground up. Mr. Nagyszalanczy does a commendable job of getting you to think through your needs and habits, along with his insight ( and examples of others' shops ) to set up a functional, habitable and not necessarily costly work shop. This book saved me time, money and some amount of frustration and embarrassment. Well worth it.

"[A] wonderful book" -- Dame Felicity Lott Waitrose Weekend "From a hard and vast archival mass...Mr de Waal has fashioned, stroke by minuscule stroke, a book as fresh with detail as if it had been written from life, and as full of beauty and whimsy as a netsuke from the hands of a master carver." It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved this book.
    By Lolly
My sister and I have different taste in most things. When I told her how much I enjoyed reading this book, she told me she couldn't get past the first chapter. She loves plot driven books and this isn't that. I on the other hand prefer atmospheric books with interesting characters, which is precisely what this is.

The author is not an historian and the less compelling parts of the book stem from news paper research and official documents. The book really came alive for me when the author drew from family correspondence and used his artist's eye to describe the objects, homes and daily lives of his relatives. The forces in the world that affect the Efrussi family, like the Dreyfus Affair, the Nazi occupation and World War Two, are dealt with in a serious, but secondary way. The art and intimacies of the family take center stage. This book took me to the salons of 19th century Paris, the palaces and dressing rooms of turn of the century Vienna and expatriate life in Japan. It is strikingly relevant at this moment in history to watch how possessions can fall away for various reasons, and leave memories and family mythologies in their place.

    Remembrance of time past
    By R. G. Saunders
This is a mesmerising many-layered book. The fascinating narrative of the fabulously wealthy Jewish Ephrussi family moves through the decades from commercial Odessa to the Paris of the Impressionists and artistic salons to the brutal destruction of the Anschluss of 1938 in Vienna and a familial diaspora over three continents. Parallel to this, we follow with the author his own emotive journey to reclaim the lives lived in the vanished rooms of his forbears. This he does sensitively and successfully, imagining his way there through archives, letters and contemporary fiction. He visits all the great houses and, in Odessa, tasting the dust of the demolished palace rooms, he rejoices in the survival of the Ephrussi family emblem on a last remaining banister.

Such evocative writing and small discovered detail make this a story we want to follow with him and we find that this is not, after all, a tale of acquisition but of loss. The 264 tiny Japanese carvings (netsuke) bought in the 1870s in Paris are all that now remain of the family possessions. We also come to understand another loss: the Ephrussis no longer felt defined by their Jewish origins: artists and socialites passed through their grand salons. It is shocking to discover that even those who enjoyed their patronage were casually anti-Semitic. It is hard to read the vivid account of the abrupt violence of the Nazis as they took (almost) every precious possession from them, leaving them, in the end, only their Jewishness.

The netsuke are the beginning and happy ending of the story. Their exquisite detail is emblematic of this beautifully crafted book and its touching story of the individuals through whose hands they passed. One or other of them seems, like a rosary, to accompany the writer in his travels: a constant reminder to keep faith with his past.

Fascinating history of a large family in turbulent times
    By Ans Koolen
Edmund de Waal, a well-known potter, inherited a collection of 264 netsuke, small delicately carved Japanese objects, originally intended as a counterweight with a small bag on one side and the netsuke on the other, worn around the sash of a man's kimono. At the end of the 19th century they became all the rage in Europe as collectors' items. The author desribes how the collection got into his family and what happend to it over the years. By doing so, he traces back his family's fascinating history. He conjures up the atmosphere in Paris and Vienna, describes in great detail homes and daily life of a super rich family, from their beginnings as bankers in Odessa to their dispersal into various countries. Especially the period around the second world war, in which everything is taken away from this Jewish family, is very moving. I found the beginning a little slow reading, but after a while I really got sucked into this story and often felt like a fly on the wall.

As darkness falls after sunset, the corelings rise—demons who possess supernatural powers and burn with a consuming hatred of humanity. For hundreds of years the demons have terrorized the night, slowly culling the human herd that shelters behind magical wards—symbols of power whose origins are lost in myth and whose protection is terrifyingly fragile. It was not always this way. Once, men and women battled the corelings on equal terms, but those days are gone. Night by night the demons grow stronger, while human numbers dwindle under their relentless assault. Now, with hope for the future fading, three young survivors of vicious demon attacks will dare the impossible, stepping beyond the crumbling safety of the wards to risk everything in a desperate quest to regain the secrets of the past. Together, they will stand against the night.

    From Publishers Weekly
Brett's debut builds slowly and grimly on a classic high fantasy framework of black-and-white morality and bloodshed. Young Arlen battles demons to save his mother while his father watches in terror; when his mother dies, Arlen runs away. Leesha leaves her village to work in the city hospital of Angiers after her betrothed claims to have taken her virginity. Jongleur Arrick Sweetsong saved himself from demons at the expense of a female friend, but he honors her last request and raises her son, Rojer, as his apprentice. Only near the end do the three strands of the story begin to intertwine. With its nameless enemies that exist only to kill, Brett's gritty tale will appeal to those who tire of sympathetic villains and long for old-school orc massacres. (Mar.)

    From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—In his debut novel, Brett catapults readers into a world in which demons rise at night and the human population lives in fear and seclusion. Only those who brave the unsheltered night and survive see what lies beyond their birth town or city. The setting itself is spare and underdeveloped with the focus instead being on the flawed heroes of the tale. Brett spends a majority of the novel—the first of a series—establishing the backstories of the main characters, three humans who come from different towns and backgrounds and are thrown into the battle at a young age. Readers are held in suspense until the three finally meet. Brett uses the demons and magic to examine issues prevalent in our own society, such as religion versus science. The book is captivating and well written, quickly drawing readers in. The Warded Man is a must-read for anyone looking for a new fantasy world to explore.—Kelliann Bogan, Colby-Sawyer College, New London, NH

    review 164 :)
    By Sarah Almahdali
With so many reviews typed up, I'm not sure that mine will be even read - and I normally don't write reviews at all, but this book was something else. I loved it for the first 2/3's of the book, and like other readers I wanted to give it a 5 star up to that point and I was probably driving my family crazy by talking about it too.

    Pro's
    - I love how the book was put together for the most part. There are three very different main characters that the author shares with the readers. And we get to see how they all grow up and how they develop.
    - The writing style was really neat. Brett brought in so many different cultures, ideas, topics and perspectives with enough detail that readers could appreciate and understand them all, but not too much detail that readers got lost in the background.
    - The plot (for the first 2/3's) was AMAZING!

    Con's
    - The last 1/3 of the the book - the characters that the author had spent most of the book developing did a 90 degree flip if not a 180. You didn't recognize the characters that you grew to love
    - Almost every scene where there was a woman, sex or child bearing was the topic of conversation. Brett made it seem like a woman's only interest/purpose was creating babies or making men happy. I totally get why (in a world where human population is decreasing, you want to have more children) but, really, there is no point in kicking a dead horse.
    - Leesha - one of the main characters. (SPOILER) She really emphasized the above point and I don't like how she "saved" herself for 27 years, then completely falls in love the another character, and gives herself to him, at the end of the story after having met him for all of 1 week. Her character was honestly really unrealistic. At the beginning of the story she was bearable, but in the last 1/3 I read through her portions as fast as possible.

As you can see from the lengths of the pro's and con's, sadly, I could not give this book that 5 stars that the first part deserves. I would recommend it if you need a change of story, b/c it really is an intriguing idea. But I just want you to take this note as a warning about the last part of the story.

    A new classic
    By Rich Gubitosi
Not since Mistborn have I been so captivated by a story and charmed by its setting. The Warded Man is an impressive debut and probably my favorite book of 2009 in any genre. If Peter Brett continues to write this way, he will need to clear space on his mantle for awards.

The Warded Man is about Arlen, a villager who must survive in a grim fantasy world ravaged by demons at night. His character arc propels the narrative once he realizes that survival is not enough. Two other characters eventually join him in his exploits against the demons: Rojer and Leesha. I like how they are regular people--too many fantasies deal with long-lost princes, wizards, queens, and knights. The best thing I can say about the three main characters is that I cared about them. Since the author takes his time developing them from children to adults, you almos feel like you are growing up alongside them. When they suffer, you will cringe, but when they excel, you will cheer.

The author's depiction of village age is authentic and folksy. Everything feels right--the gossip, the neighborliness, the barter, the sense of feeling apart from the other villages and cities. The world is dangerous, and not everyone gets along, but people set aside their differences when the demons strike. Later in the novel, the author describes city life just as well as village life, especially once Arlen reaches Krasia, a hub of a warrior society with Arabic influences.

The novel packs action, adventure, romance, and substance. I like how it considers the nature of heroism, the futility of passivity, and even the plight of women. The scenes of combat between man and demon are gratifying, and the one romantic scene is heady with tenderness and passion. The author has a pleasing, crisp, lively style that serves the story and does not overwhelm it.

Like many fantasies, The Warded Man ends with a teaser for the next book. For once, I am glad that a book does not end conclusively. I am counting days until Brett's next book. If you only read one fantasy in 2009, The Warded Man is the one to read.

    Great reading for the week
    By Book Lover
5 Stars to me means it was a book that I really enjoyed, I look forward to the sequel, I spent some time thinking about the characters, and I really looked forward to picking up where I left off. This book did all of that for me. If 5 stars means it is a true classic and very rare then maybe it gets 4 stars but that is as low as I could see going.

I like fantasy stories, I am a big Game of Thrones, Name of the Wind fan and I like Dungeons and Dragons style stories.

This story was cool in that it was reasonably unique given the genre, the author did a nice job building the backstory on the main characters (some could say it was slow but I liked it).

The book is not as mature as Game of Thrones but it is too mature for my 10 year old to read it, I think 15+ would be great for this book.

I have not yet read any of the sequels (ordered the next one) but I look forward to them and I really enjoyed this book, finished it in a week or so. The book is not a complete cliff hangover but it also doesn't completely resolve the story at the end either.
