A hands-on book to get started with AngularJS applications

AngularJS Web Application Development Blueprints is a hands-on book that helps even people with little background in Javascript development to get started and become productive with AngularJS.
After a few introductory chapters, where the reader learns the basics of AngularJS and how to setup a meaningful development environment and what are the main tools involved, the book starts to explain more advanced topics.

Every chapter focuses on a specific kind of application, so the reader can follow the whole coding process until the app is complete, while learning the chapter concepts and techniques.
There are many topics covered and many go beyond the scope of just learning AngularJS, but they are a bonus needed to understand how real world apps like the ones explained in the book should be developed.
The most interesting chapters explain how to build an application on a MEAN stack and how to deploy a complex app on the AWS platform.
The reader can also download a large code bundle with all the apps explained throughout the book, including the development environment.

In summary, this is a nice book to read if you want to learn what you need to start to develop complex applications using AngularJS and the options you have to deploy them on currently available platforms.

It takes a practical approach to explaining the various concepts in Angular making it very easy to understand and follow

I had just started working on a new project involving Node and AngularJS, that’s when I stumbled upon this book. This book is quite different from the others that I’ve read so far. It takes a practical approach to explaining the various concepts in Angular making it very easy to understand and follow. The book has quite a few useful examples like integrating facebook with your app, using Angular UI, switching the routing between Node and Angular, using Interceptors etc. all of which came in quite handy while working on my project.
What I really liked about this book is that it goes beyond just Angular and covers other allied skillsets like CSS theming, optimizing your page load times and deploying apps on AWS. It would have been good to see examples of how to deploy to other cloud platforms like Google App Engine, Heroku or Digital Ocean.

A serious learners guide to AngularJS

AngularJS Web Application Development Blueprints

Trying to be objective as this should be a blueprint for a total beginner. I'd recommend having a decent background in web development prior to purchasing this book, with that said this book did the trick for me. I've got other books on AngularJS and have left reviews for those as well. This book covers so much ground in so little time, using various plugins to bring together a concrete framework that will help get an application going within a short amount of time.

I don't feel the a 1 star rating was appropriate from some reviews, this book may have some things you can find in the documentation but why not have a nice hands on guide that gets you going with an bunch of applications from start to finish, letting you see the milestones as you go. Priceless for learning, and on top of that the book get's serious on page 103 with unit testing and mocking up returns for testing.. really neat and informative way to test my application before I unleash it on users who may experience some anomalies that would've been avoided in the first place.

Worth the cost if you really want to get hands on with AngularJS.

Dr. Gary Slutkin was back in Chicago, his hometown, feeling restless. He was a rumpled infectious diseases specialist who had spent most of his career in San Francisco and Africa, battling tuberculosis, AIDS, and cholera. But he had burned out in refugee camps, his marriage had fallen apart, and now it was time to be nearer to his elderly parents. He had no clue what to do for work.

As he explored options, Slutkin began hearing about gang violence in Chicago, about ten-year-olds shooting other kids; this was shocking, but it also sounded more like Somalia and other places he knew. Slutkin began to study inner-city violence and pored over graphs of homicides and shootings—and to an epidemiologist they all seemed oddly familiar.

“It hit me: this is an infectious disease,” he said. The more Slutkin looked at urban violence, the more he felt that it had been misdiagnosed as solely a crime problem when in many ways it was a contagion analogous to cholera or leprosy. As with other contagions, an infection depends upon exposure among susceptible people who have low resistance or compromised immunity. Slutkin saw that “an epidemic of violence” is more than just a metaphor; in some ways murder actually spreads like a contagious disease.

“It is just as tuberculosis begets tuberculosis, or flu begets flu,” Slutkin says, “that violence begets violence.”

Once Slutkin had the insight that violence could be considered, in part, an infectious disease, he decided to tackle it as a public health problem and slow the epidemic. He started an organization called Cure Violence, and turned to ex-convicts and former gang members to act as health outreach workers and interrupt the contagion. When someone is shot, they go to the hospital room to counsel against a retaliatory hit. They gather intelligence on threats and negotiate peaceful solutions. More broadly, they try to change community norms so that those who use violence are scorned rather than respected. “Violence is learned behavior,” says Gary Slutkin. “Violence can also be unlearned behavior.”

In recent years, the Cure Violence model has spread to other cities in the United States and abroad—even to Iraq and Colombia—and results have been remarkable. Careful evaluations have found that Cure Violence can reduce serious violence by one-quarter or more, at a negligible cost. Gary Slutkin thinks that with some tweaking and enough resources, the model could reduce homicides by 70 percent.

Rachel Beckwith, Lester Strong, and Dr. Gary Slutkin reflect a yearning to express our humanity by finding innovative and effective ways to give back. We crave meaning and purpose in life, and one way to find it is to connect to a cause larger than ourselves. This book is about innovators who are using research, evidence- based strategies, and brilliant ideas of their own to prevent violence, improve health, boost education, and spread opportunity at home and around the world—and to suggest to the rest of us specific ways in which we too can make a difference in the world. Some of these people we highlight raise or contribute the money, such as Rachel and her family and admirers who made something inspiring out of a tragedy. Some are organizers, such as Slutkin and Strong. Many more are foot soldiers. Together, they are all part of a revolution in tack- ling social problems, employing new savvy, discipline, and experience to chip away at poverty and injustice. On many issues ranging from failing schools in America to intestinal parasites in Africa, there are fascinating new approaches to making a difference; in some cases, the progress is startling.

So many social problems in the twenty-first century seem intractable and insoluble. We explore Mars and embed telephones in wrist- watches, but we can’t keep families safe in the inner cities. We can map subatomic particles such as gluons, and we can design robots that drive cars, respond to speech, and defeat grandmasters in chess, but we grudgingly accept failure in our struggles to keep kids in school, off drugs, and out of gangs. Many of us know that it’s wrong and unfair that boys growing up in certain zip codes are more likely to end up in prison than in college, but we throw up our hands and surrender to the exigencies of ghetto life. Violence and poverty, whether in Congo or Chicago, remain towering realities.

We started our married life together as foreign correspondents for The New York Times, and we have wondered for years how we can do a better job addressing the needs around us. Not everyone can help fight crime in a city’s worst neighborhoods or volunteer in schools, so most of us are left to engage in piecemeal efforts such as a donation here or there. Like many Americans, we have day jobs we need to keep, and we have been busy raising our children; that has left us looking for great causes and people to support in modest ways. We aren’t regular churchgoers who focus our giving on a particular religious establishment, and although we wanted to lend a hand, we never knew how to choose among the appeals from nonprofits that inundated us. Basically, we were mystified about how best to assist at home as well as abroad. So we investigated how one can do a better job of making a difference, how one can help institute effective change. This book is the fruit of our labors.

A very thorough book on opportunities for change

A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity is a well-researched, dense book on options for individuals to make a difference.

It begins with 3 case stories: one where a young girl died and raised a lot of money for the charity she was supporting; one who was labeled but with the support of an adult, became a very successful adult himself; and one who is implementing a paradigm shift in the way community violence is treated and having good success. Kristof and WuDunn then detail personal stories, triumphs, and how people helped. They point out times that it was a single individual; or a corporation; or a non-profit. The moral: anyone can help; there are many opportunities; giving is good for both social and emotional improvement.

At the end of the book, the authors summarize:
1) Find an issue that draws you in and research it
2) Volunteer, get involved, or do something more than just writing checks
3) Use your voice to spread the word or advocate for those who are voiceless

These are really great ideas, but I wished they had been drawn out sooner so readers could be thinking about this approach while reading the chapters.

The book is nicely referenced and includes a significant list of groups, agencies, and websites that are good resources if the reader wants to get involved. The reason I docked a star from the book was because it is so incredibly dense that it will take a very motivated individual to thoroughly read it. The authors are NYT writers, and the chapters read as such. It borders on the crossroads of greatness - but the emotional connection is just not quite there. I do think people will feel increased hope after reading it, but my concern is that the people naturally drawn to a book such as this are likely already in a giving mindset, it may have been a better service to the concept to make the book a little more reader friendly to appeal to a wider audience and change their perspective.

Provides the inspiration and the tools to help make the world a better place

With all the trouble and pain in our world, do you ever have the urge to `light the single candle' rather than curse the darkness - in others words do something to make the world a better place rather than wring your hands? But, like so many of us you are daunted by the challenge? If so, "A Path Appears", written by the talented Pulitzer-prize winning husband and wife duo, Nick Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, is the book just for you. Following on the heels of their deeply moving best seller "Half the Sky" - that argued compellingly that gender inequality is the moral issue of our time - "A Path Appears" is a welcome sequel. Kristof and WuDunn tell riveting stories about real people successfully confronting seemingly insurmountable challenges - from gang violence in the U.S. to birth defects in developing countries. They go the extra step to inform those stories with current research about what works to help tackle the world's toughest problems, and how individuals can get involved with a cause or issue they care about. While I read the book in nearly one sitting, it could easily be great bedside reading, because each segment can be digested separately. This book will inspire you to 'light that candle' in an area close to your heart and give you the tools to do just that.

An inspirational book about a revolution in philanthropic affairs

Until recently, when most people got an urge to make the world a better place, they thought they had little choice but to reach for their checkbook and make a donation to a large established non-profit who spends about half the money on administration and fundraising, and the other half on some well-intentioned project that is rife with unintended consequences, Western arrogance, and marginal impact on the issue they were trying to resolve.

This book is about the ways that real help is provided through creative approaches that yield exceptional results efficiently. It is inspirational and practical at the same time. Instead of the classic approach to philanthropy of riding into town to solve a problem, the focus of A Path Appears is more about people and groups who find the opportunities to help people and communities help themselves.

I recommend that you read this book for two reasons. It will inspire you towards making a difference in the lives around you, in ways that really matter. Also, if you just want to cut a check, the authors' research and eloquent writing will help you make good choices in where you send that check.

A New Money Mindset is a Christian book about generosity. The authors believe if we as Christian's can manage our money better, then in turn we can maximize our giving. The book talks about us sharing not just money but our time, energy, wisdom, talents, attention, empathy, compassion and self. We should find ways to bless others, even when we feel we don't have enough money to do so. Many people will not give because they are waiting on getting enough money. When we believe God will supply all our needs, we don't have to wait in order to give. The books states that our mindset around money cause us to believe more "money" or "stuff" is the answer to our problems. In order to assess your money mindset we need to know where we are, before we can get to know where we are going.

The book uses fictional characters Ryan and Aylcia to demonstrate one couples unhealthy relationship with money. They both want a better life and who can blame them. They are hard workers who only want the best for their family. Ryan and Aylcia continues to spend more and more even afraid that their world will come crashing down around them. Fear and uneasiness is what happens when we live beyond our means.

The book starts off talking about our money problems. Our culture makes it impossible for any of us to be content. Every year a new iPhone, iPad or iSomething comes out. It is hard stand on the sidelines watching everyone else run around trying to have more. Our kids if they go to college they get out saddle with debt and have to get a job to start paying the money back so they start out way behind and only with determination will they catch up or if they don't go to college they end up behind with low paying jobs.

Most people long for security, no one wants to struggle. Feeling security comes from planning by taking a look at our lives and make a right practical decision. Having a strategy in place to overcome life fears and worrying by trusting in God. This books goes over the strategies in the chapter Living in Freedom by have a rich relationship with God.

Consumerism is "our desire to acquire more for ourselves when we already have enough". The book states it is our obsession about money and all it can buy. The authors explain no matter where we are on the socioeconomic ladder, all of us can thrive right now--personally as a family and as a part of a community. The ripple effects of sharing that we have enough for ourselves and enough to share.

Thrivent Financial came up with five distinct attitudes people hold toward money. The 5Ss are Surviving, Struggling, Stable, Secure, and Surplus. Surplus is where everyone wants to be. The authors state that always wanting more and more and keeping all for ourselves has not made us happy or brought joy into our lives. I found the book to be an easy read, what I got out of the book is that if I was smart with my money, resource and time, I could give in order to help someone else. The book was an easy ready and had some valid points about finances and giving.

A spiritual look at money

This is book that takes a spiritual look at money. If you're looking for a book that will teach you the step-by-step guide on how to earn more money and get rich, well, Your New Money Mindset: Create A Healthy Relationship With Money is not for you. At least, in the traditional definition that encompasses the word 'rich'.

This book basically talks about the value of giving and eradicating the consumerism mentality telling us that we still need more than what we already have. Authors Brad Hewitt and James Moline says it doesn't matter if you earn $300,000 or $40,000 if you constantly think that you have to earn or have more money before you can give to charity or help out a brother in need.

The authors worked on explaining the new money mindset by introducing a fictional couple who lived beyond their means, who unnecessarily spent for things that they don't really need, who have unconsciously passed on to their children the unhealthy lifestyle concept that they need material things to make them feel better. The rest of the chapters then talked about the importance of making good use of your money, time, and resources so you can be generous - not only monetarily but also of your time and company - to others.

In one of the earlier chapters, Hewitt and Moline discussed the 5S Attitude People Have Toward Money. These are surviving, struggling, stable, secure, and surplus. The authors noted that the surplus mindset is where we all want to live. It's the new money mindset we aim to grow into and one of our goals is to help you take your own next steps toward that way of thinking and living, they noted.

In Hewitt and Moline's money talk, the surplus mindset is one that has a healthy relationship with money. People with this mindset feel grateful and ready to share. Hewitt and Moline describes this group as: they believe they have more than enough and don't constantly long for more material things. Their spendings match their needs displaying a high level of commitment without living an extravagant and lavish lifestyle.

What the authors kept on repeating throughout the book is to learn to give and to share - and you don't need a lot a $300,000 annual income to do that.

At the very core of this book is the message that money is just green paper. How you view it and make use of it will define the quality of your life. It can control you if you let it. It can be happy companion or an instrument of goodwill if you use it smartly coupled with a giving heart.

The book is a light read but the tone is quite boring. The progress is slow and lacks an upbeat voice that would keep you awake all night to read it. It's the kind of book that you may want to bring in a retreat because it entails a lot of deep thoughts and evaluation on how you look at money and how you transform yourself to take appropriate action.

I'm giving this book six out of 10 stars. This book is not for everyone. Bible verses are constantly mentioned chapter after chapter so nope, this book ain't Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Simply put, it's a Christian way of looking at money.

Give the first three chapters a try and if you find yourself dozing off, let the book and your eyes rest and then move to the last chapter.

You won't really miss a lot that way.

Nice Overview of the Song Dynasty

This is a very nice overview of the Song dynasty. It's comprehensive yet concise. The book begins with a historical overview and then proceeds thematically. The chapters are:

1. A Time of Turmoil
2. Model Rulers
3. Reforming into Collapse
4. The Song in the South
5. Three Doctrines
6. Education and Examination
7. Life Cycle Rituals
8. Exploring the World Within and Without
9. Transforming the Capitals
10. A Changing World of Production
11. Money and Taxes
12. Private Lives in the Public Sphere
Conclusion

Chapter 7 has an interesting discussion of the education of women and women's property rights. Chapter 8 has a nice overview of Song dynasty literature, scroll paintings and scientific developments. The book has black and white photos of scroll paintings, diagrams of Buddhist temples, and makes good use of maps. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly.

When Confucianism ruled

This fourth volume of HUP's History of Imperial China focuses on the Song Dynasty between the 10th and the 13th century, a period during which Confucianism (re-)gained its role as a government doctrine in China. Contrasting its European contemporary societies, this also implied government by officials, who were primarily chosen because of (certain) merits, versus feudal governments chosing their officials through parentage.
The book outlines the many technological and commercial developments in China during this period, as money paper (including inflation) was introduced, trade was boosted and the infrastructure was improved. On the other hand, the Song Dynasty was constantly fighting against its Northern neighbours, the Khitan Liao and the Jurchen Jin dynasties, while the latter even pushed the Song out of their Chinese heartland and established a border along the Huai River in 1126. Nevertheless, until the Mongol invasion in 1279 the Southern Song recovered and established a different China, focussing much more on the South and its traditions.
In his set up of the book, the author Dieter Kuhn follows the example of the previous three volumes, written by Mark E. Lewis, starting with a rather short summary (90 pages) of the political history, followed by chapters on religion and philosophy, the system of recruiting officials, arts and science, the capitals, and economy and government finances.
The main text of roughly 280 pages is accompanied by maps (there could be more) and explanatory images, and followed by dynastic tables of the Song and their counter-dynasties in the North, as well as a 30 pages bibiography.
Again this volume is written well and gives an interesting overview of the period. Recommendable for all interested in Chinese history.

Most fascinating book in the series so far

Before I read this book, the Song Dynasty for me was one of the least interesting dynasties. However, after reading it, I want to read more about the Song. The author knows so much about this period in Chinese history and he does such an effective job at describing it and analyzing. I noticed that the sources for this book uses more original sources written in Chinese. I have read the previous books in this series and was never as curious about the dynasties that they covered as I was about this one. This is a credit to the scholarly research, passion, and knowledge of this author. I have not had a chance to read the rest of the series due to their price being out of my range.

I do have one problem with this book and that is the writing style of the author. I am an ESL writing teacher and I teach students to write in the American rhetorical style with the main idea at the beginning of the paragraph followed by supporting details. However, the paragraphs rarely follow this structure and it makes it really frustrating to read at times. Most paragraphs start out with one idea and end with a completely different idea. It is instead written using European paragraph structure in which the topic statement is "cleverly" hidden, non-existent or comes toward the end of the paragraph. In contrast, the previous books in this series are written by an American who writes in the American rhetorical style, and they are very clear and easy to read. I actually have thought about bringing in some of these two writers' paragraphs as examples of how to write and how not to write a paragraph. I wish this book had been better edited to suit an English speaking audience.

Pretty Boring book

I read the whole book, but it was pretty slow at times. I had to force my way through a lot of it. I found out a lot more about Harold Lloyd though, so I guess the book accomplishes what it set out to do. I'd say it is for hardcore Harold Lloyd fans only.

Decent read by a backpacker who experienced some horrific things

Good book. This travel read, of course, is all true and actually happened. These guys took risks and experienced tragedy. It's a good read for someone who is interested to travel to Thailand's beaches---know what things to avoid.

Oddly Inspirational

With its laddish overtones, ribald; almost crass style, I wanted to dislike this one from the start. The trouble was I could not put it down. It's all those things I always believed makes for a bad read - bad grammer, worse punctuation, simple and linear plot - and yet here I am giving the damn thing the thumbs up. The reason being, I think, is that John, the hapless protagonist, conveys his story to us without the usual analysis. It's writing brfore writing became so self-concious.

Adventure of a Life time

This book kept me on my toes throughout the whole read. I tried to read as little as I could, so that the experience could last longer, but I was unable to put it down.

If your into spontaneous adventure, with tales of danger along the way, throughout south east asia, australia and hong kong, then this book is your you.
