Painless Learning for Great Public Speaking

TED Talks reminds me a little of a book I read decades ago… Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. As I read that book I kept thinking, yes, interesting idea – and another. When I finished, I thought ok good pointers but will it make any difference? Then I played someone who I had never won against in dozens of opportunities and I beat them.

Bobby Fischer’s book was one of the first popular books I read that used programmed learning… stepping the reader through a series of painless exercises. I’ve also seen that technique also used in a book that teaches math by setting up the problems faced by Euclid, etc. and giving readers enough clues so they too can reach their own aha moments.

While TED Talks doesn’t use programmed learning, it is very painless reading, packed with lots of good ideas. You may not come away and be able to deliver a TED Talk right away but you will come away with at least several new ideas on how to improve your ability to get your message across in group settings.

Anyone who has seen several TED Talks knows there is no one way to deliver the talks but the book has plenty to say about what generally doesn’t work and what does. I’ll just hit on a few that struck me as helpful:

• Don’t give a sales pitch. The speaker’s job is to give to the audience, not to take.
• Sometimes it takes a little demolition before changing minds. Example: In ancient societies, a third of men died violent deaths. Modern media plays up violence because that’s what sells.We've changed. After crushing their stereotypes, now you can go onto your points.
• Take your audience down your own path of discovery. By asking them to join the process, they get more involved.
• Make sure your words and images work together.
• Don’t leave a slide up once you are finished with it. Better to put up a blank screen to avoid distraction.
• Transitions in Keynote should be kept simple. Cut when shifting to a new idea. Dissolve when slides are related. Dazzle distracts.
• Most TED speakers memorize and then practice so much it sounds spontaneous.
• Wrinkled clothes telegraph you don’t try. If you don't care, why should they?
• Breathe deeply, take your power pose. Be sure to hydrate.
• Keep your notes by your water. When you grab a drink, you can quickly glance at where you are. Notes can be there if you need them. Hopefully, you won't.

Some books are easy to imagine exploding into narrative form from an Author's lifetime of work. Then there are the books that probably took years of cajoling from well intentioned friends before they finally come to fruition. This book seems like the latter. In a quiet signature style, TED founder Chris Anderson takes readers behind the scenes of some of the most well known moments from the iconic TED stage and what it took for those speakers to get there. Before TED Talks, the idea of a 17 minute non-fiction talk going "viral" with millions of views would have been unheard of. The point this book makes over and over again is that this is the real power of a great talk in the right moment. It can turn companies around and inspire people like nothing else. The premise of delivering an actual TED talk may seem like the most intimidating way to try and improve your speaking skills. The vaunted position TED talks take in our consciousness could make it seem like an unapproachable ideal. Yet reading this book, the one belief that comes through loud and clear is that being a powerful speaker is a skill that is within reach for anyone. Rather than sharing a secret formula for an ideal TED talk, Anderson offers tips and techniques that TED speakers use, but which could be applied for anyone. Aside from having delivered 2 TEDx talks myself, I also currently teach storytelling and speaking at Georgetown University. I will be recommending this book to my students - and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an actionable and entertaining book on becoming a more persuasive speaker as well.

Not Just For TED Talks...But For Anyone Who Talks!

An excellent guidebook for anyone who wants or needs to design and deliver more effective presentations of any kind. Written in a casual, conversational style by Chris Anderson, it's like having a presentation coach in a book. Even though I've been a professional speaker for years, TED TALKS provided me with a number of valuable tools, tips, and techniques that I can immediately put into action to improve my presentations. And, as an added bonus, the author brings his lessons to life by pointing us to his online video "playlist," making it simple for us to locate the real-life TED Talk examples he references within the book. Highly recommended.

Nevada history

This was a Christmas for my son who is very interested in the past history of Nevada. We moved to Reno five years ago and love reading about the history of the people and the mining and the way they lived and survived. He has begun to read this book and says it is very interesting and informative.

The Wild West of Old Nevada

What was the Wild West really like? In "Nevada's Turbulent Yesterday ...a Study in Ghost Towns," Don Ashbaugh explores what the Wild West was like in the Silver State. The introduction gives a good overview of the first explorers, describing feats of mountain men like Jedidiah Smith, Rafael Rivera and John C. Fr�mont. The book skips around the State, telling interesting stories of the Spanish, Mormons, Mexicans and miners. Las Vegans will be surprised to learn about the nearby Potosi mining operation. Naturally, Ashbaugh tells the story of the Indian renegades Queho and Avote. 'Three Wet Mormon Communities' explains the history of the submerged town of St. Thomas. Through this book, John Ely, George Wheeler, Kit Carson and F.L.A. Pioche are no longer mere namesakes of geographic or cultural features, but real men. "Nevada's Turbulent Yesterday" offers an interesting insight into Mormon colonization. Absent from most text books, Ashbaugh offers side notes and casual observations that constitute the connective tissue of a fuller understanding of the State. Coming in at almost 350 pages, this is a dense and heavy read. While accessible enough, the depth, large scope and length will mostly attract committed students of history and discourage those with only a casual interest. "Nevada's Turbulent Yesterday" is accompanied with a decent collection of photographs and a good index. Since the table of contents is organized into regions with artistic chapter titles, the index is especially important for finding a particular town or geographic feature. Don Ashbaugh's writing is good. Some potential readers may prejudge the book based on the melodramatic title that sounds like a nod to Western dime novels. Rest assured, Ashbaugh approaches his subject as a serious historian. Initially printed in 1963, this book represents a bridge between current historians and the initial efforts to put together the story of the Sagebrush State. The most recent printing was some thirty years ago. The vintage artwork and yellowing pages give the sense that the book is itself a piece of the past. Read "Nevada's Turbulent Yesterday" and step back in time.

Excellent Source For History Buffs

The best way for me to describe this book is to explain that it's written by a journalist who had a passion for Nevada's history and it's old towns. Basically, the info (well, a large sum of it) is derived from other newspapers archives and editors notes from these now long forgotten towns and camps, some of which are now nothing more than a pile of wood in the desert. The author even follows some of these "pioneer editors" to the different towns that they worked in, and indirectly describes how the newspapers played an important role in promoting the growth of each new town.

It's from these old newspapaers that we hear stories of who shot who and why, and what they said in their defense in court...as well as the tidbits about daily life in some of these remote isolated camps. The author of this book weaves the tales into entertaining summaries.

This is a great book, but you do need time to sit and read the stories. If you've explored some of these old town sites, this book is an invaluable insight into the daily lives of the one-time inhabitants. Any book that has some info on one of the least known camps, Santa Clara, is good in my opinion!

TONY GEMIGNANI is the chef and owner of seven restaurants: Tony's Pizza Napoletana, Capo's, and Tony's Coal-Fired Pizza in San Francisco, Pizza Rock in Sacramento and Las Vegas, Tony's of North Beach and Slice House by Tony Gemignani in Rohnert Park. He's also the co-owner of the International School of Pizza in San Francisco. Gemignani has been making pizza for over 20 years and holds an impressive set of awards.

Wow. Seriously, wow!

In 2011, I took a wonderful pizza making class in New York City's Little Italy, and I've been making decent pizza at home since then. However, after 5 years, I found I wasn't getting any better at stretching out my pizza dough, and the quality of my pizza dough itself wasn't always consistent. Frustrated, I took The Pizza Bible out of the library and was immediately attracted to the lush pictures of every type of pizza I'd ever heard of and some that I hadn't, (St. Louis style? Cincinnati Red?) I was a little put off by some of the writing. As 11-time World Pizza Champ, there are at least 11 recipe intros of pizza making heroism that I originally found a bit over the top. In any case, I decided that my pizza making wasn't going to get any better on it's own and I purchased the book.

Tony states that professional grade, high gluten flour along with diastatic malt powder are essential to amazing pizza dough. So I held off awhile because that was annoying. I could find a bunch of the kind of flours called for on Amazon, as well as the malt powder, but they weren't all on Amazon Prime and I didn't want to have pay shipping on 4 different 5 pound bags of flour. However, on Tony's website,[...], Tony sells sample packs of assorted flours and throws in a small packet of the malt powder. The person I contacted there was super helpful and accommodating and I placed my order. Then I made a batch of the Master Recipe dough, which Tony gives as a sort of lesson for your first attempt. It took 3 days, but I could tell right away it was different from my old dough recipe. It was lighter, bubblier, softer and stickier. On the third day I barely needed to stretch it- I was able to softly press it to the correct size in a minute or two.

Then there was the taste. You know people say "it's even better than what you can get in a restaurant?" but it never really is? THIS IS! Seriously- my 8 year old noticed! My husband, who thought the whole need for me to order 15 pounds of flour through the mail was a scam, literally ate his words. Not only was the crust tender and delicate, the flavor was incredible! Nuanced! I made something with nuances!! I right away emailed the nice man who helped me choose flours from Tony's shop to thank him, and he told me that once I graduate the next step, which is the dough using the starters, it will make it even better. I can't imagine. I can't wait.

If you want to make great pizza, get this book. Yes, you will need to order special ingredients and buy special supplies. You will need to invest time and refrigerator space. Suck it up! It's worth it!

Essential for the pizza lover or pizza cook

I consider myself a very experienced pizza cook, having worked at Paisan's in Madison, Wisconsin in college, tried dozens of types around the world, especially in Italy, taken a short course on Italian cooking at the Culinary Institute of America, learning great hints from members of the Wine Lovers discussion board, and making hundreds of great tasting pizzas on a Viking cooker at 900F in Franklin Lakes.

After reading through this wonderful, compendium, "I know nothing!"

I am in awe of Mr. Gemignani; there is so much knowledge, love and experience here -- this is an essential book for anyone who loves to eat pizza and even more for anyone who wants to make great pizza.

Hints galore: use of a steel sheet instead of a pizza stone -- my modification -- use both.

Home oven broiler method -- can't get them to 900F -- but following his method, the pizza was pretty darn good at 550F.

Flours -- the blends are best and all available online.

Tomato -- canned, diced from Italy most reliable.

Baker's percentages chart -- dough calls for bakers; the rest of the game is for cooks. Two different personalities and Mr. Gemignani speaks to both.

Gluten free, if you must.

How-to pictures; pictures of some results although not all recipes, works well in the heat of battle on iPhone or iPad; all ingredients in order and partially cooked, Speed when needed; otherwise take your time. Lots of pictures of pizzas, but not one for each pizza recipe. Page layout is easy to follow as you go from book to working on your counter top. Type style is easy on the eyes. Ingredient lists are straight forward.

A great resource for anyone interested in pizza.

Phenomenal education, but maybe it should be your second book?

I've been making pizza for about 20 years, with pretty good success (at least, that's what my family and guests have told me). Recently, I bought Ken Forkish's "The Elements of Pizza" in the hopes of taking my pizza skills to a new level. Shortly after, I bumped into "The Pizza Bible," and bought that too. I learned a lot from both this and the Forkish book, but this one is my hands-down favorite of the two. Gemignani tells you in the clearest fashion, WHY he does things the way he does them. That gives you a deeper understanding of what you are doing, helps you figure out precisely what he's telling you to do, and gives you the confidence to experiment with shortcuts or other modifications. This stands in sharp contrast to Forkish, who often tells you what to do but not why, and when the instructions are less than transparent (e.g., Forkish's description of how to ball the dough), it's impossible to figure out what he means. Another major contrast between Gemignani's book and Forkish's book is that Gemignani is very efficient - he doesn't repeat himself much. He gives you lots of details in the "Master Class" section of the book, and subsequently he gives briefer instructions, on the assumption that you learned something from executing the class. In contrast, Forkish is highly redundant, repeating many of the instructions in every recipe. You could probably distill Forkish's book into one that is half as long. Gemignani provides a comprehensive tour of many different pizza styles, with a couple of recipes for each style. So, why do I say, don't make this your first book? The problem here is that Gemignani is a craftsman, and he wants every reader to be a craftsman. (His motto is, "Respect the Craft.") That means pizza doughs that take 3-5 days to concoct, and having not one pizza stone, but two, and having both a large and small-volume digital scale. And it's true, all this craftsmanship does make for a better pizza. But even without a single digital scale, and with only one stone, and using a recipe with a dough rise-time of only a couple of hours, you can still make a pizza that will be competitive with most national chain high-quality pizzerias, and will simply whip the pants off a low-quality chain like Pizza Hut. Yes, your pizzas may sometimes be shaped a like Australia (or worse, Africa), and in a side-by-side taste test your 2-hour dough won't be as good as a 3-day dough, but they will still be great. Also, there are a lot of great pizza topping possibilities that involve only a few ingredients, yet you might not think of yourself. A beginner will benefit from a book that provides a lot of suggestions (like red onion, potato, pancetta, and fontina!). The recipes here - while terrific - are extremely esoteric, complex, and often reference obscure artisan brands, which will be either tough to obtain, or it will be impossible to know what would be an appropriate substitute. Start with a book like Evan Kleiman's "Angeli Caffe Pizza Pasta Panini" (out of print, but still available, last time I checked), which gives you a simple dough and a lot of recipes. Fall in love with making your own pizza, then graduate to this book.

Excellent advanced EKG book for EPs. Not for beginners.

Excellent review of real EKGs with short one-liner histories, just like when you're working in a busy ED and constantly have the EKG techs asking you to sign EKGs. This book is for people who need to read real EKGs of real patients, and it is definitely not for beginners. You need to know the basics of how to read an EKG first, and this book will help you pick up on abnormalities which are necessary for emergency medicine. It does not talk at all about the basics of the EKG tracing or give an overview of EKG at all, it is cover-to-cover real EKGs with explanations, no wasted space. It does have an index in the back, which is nice because you can go back and find cases of particular abnormalities easily.

Format is irritating

Dr. Mattu needs no introduction as a recognized expert. However, this book, whether in e-form or paperback is incredibly poorly assembled in my opinion. The EKGs are in one place in the book and the explanations are in another. So one must constantly switch back and forth. The publisher should consider changing the format so that the EKG and it's explanation is on the same page, even at the expense of adding a few pages!

Finally an ECG book that is actually worth more than what you pay for

This book is an excellent resource for anybody with a good grounding of ECG basics. This is not for the beginner. The ECGs are of high quality with great explanations of the findings and their clinical pertinence emphasized. This really is for any physician (not just the ER doc) or anybody interested in increasing their ECG acumen and ability. As Dr. Mattu points out it may help you to save a life. I am actually quite impressed with this simple and well thought out format. There is a lot of repetition to hammer home key points. By doing 10 EKGs every day you will get through this book in 3 weeks...and will go back again and again for reinforcement.

This one starts really, REALLY raunchy, and it stays that way all the way through. Sophia acts in ways that are only acceptable in erotica stories like this, and hey, that's why I read this genre.
For that matter, Gerald Sand, hunky billionaire (drool) acts in some very “erotica-only” ways as well, particularly during a very explicit dinner scene.
Bottom line? The two are meant to be together, and luckily there's a Happily-Ever-After at the end of this. I would have been VERY mad if Sophia ended up with someone else...and I was pleasantly surprised by the way that she decided to win Gerald's heart (hint: she decides that just one woman isn't enough for him...)

This was the 1st book I have read by Nadia and I have to say it was absolutely fantastic!

I read a lot of erotica and this ticked a lot of boxes. I find dominant men a turn on and the ones who are billionaires/bosses/people in positions of power always seem to get my pulse racing. This is lots of really hot action in it and had me wanting to read more of Nadia's books.

I have read a few more so far, nothing as yet has surpassed my enjoyment of this book.

If you like steamy action with a Billionaire Boss I cannot recommend this book more highly.

This story is about Sophia, a “new adult” in the world, who falls in love with billionaire Gerald Sand. It's a story you've read before, done Nadia Nightside's way.

So, what does that mean? Well, to me it means the main star here is the sexy writing and the hot sex scenes. There are plenty of both, and they really got me involved.

The story is good, and the dialogue appropriately quippy and fun, but really what I was in it for was some steamy action, and I got it!
