Good practical introduction to hive

This book is a good practical introduction to hive, with plenty of examples and explanations on how to run your queries and create your tables, as well as to extend data with UDFs.
It's worth mentioning what it does *not* have, that is, it doesn't talk about hive/hadoop internals, nor about administration. If you're also interested in those topics you should have a look at Programming Hive, but if all you need is just to learn the quirks of HSQL, how to optimize your queries and how to extend hive this book has pretty much all you need.

A complete coverage of Hive

After reading a large part of the book, most Hive users will benefit from it, including those who never had been in contact with Hadoop before. There are a few chapters like the "Join optimizations" chapter which I use as a reference when I wish to refresh my memories about which type of join to define and how to express them. Also, user defined functions are well covered with 4 chapters dedicated to it.

Well rounded tome on Hive

Finally a well rounded and well grounded book on Hive. Everyone thinks that HQL is the beginning an end of Hive, without realizing that there is so much more to this interesting technology. Darren has finally come out with this much needed work that explores all the other key aspects of Hive such as it's storage formats and how they are essential for running efficient map/reduce. The more advanced features such as UDFs. The ability to interact with Hive using non-interactive mechanisms like drivers, thrift server etc. I personally found this book to be very useful and eye opening eventough I have been working with Hive for the past two years. I give this work a two thumbs up.

It's a shame it's out of print

The first two pages are of Linda Bove showing the signs for the alphabet. Each page after that is based on a theme (for example: "In the morning" has pictures of Linda doing words like "Good, Morning, Alarm clock, window, comb, toothpaste, mirror..." followed by another page with drawings of Sesame street characters and settings with each of those signs in it and something along the line of "How many things in this picture can you sign?" (with all of those things in it).
The themes are "In the morning", "The family", "School days", "Colors", "on the farm", "playground fun", "Opposites", "Action words", "People in the neighborhood", "Spring", "Summer", "autumn", "Winter", "Utensils and food", "In the woods", "How people get around", "In the Jungle", "The way you feel", and "Nighttime". The final two pages of the book are dedicated to signing the numbers 1-10.
It is a fantastic book and I hope they decide to start printing it again so my friends can stop looking for discarded library copies. ;)

Learning to sign

My kindergartener has been learning a few signs at school and I remembered this book from my childhood and wished I still had mine. I'm glad I can find a used copy. As a kid of 7 or 8 I taught myself the alphabet and a few other signs. I never had an opportunity to use the signs myself (except when spelling out words in front of my children like 'candy' or 'movie'!) I look forward to sharing this book with my son, and I also wish they would make a new printing.

Of Permanent Value: The Story of Warren Buffett/2012 Odyssey Edition, written by Andrew Kilpatrick is a must read for all Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway fans. Value investors (or anyone who is interested in investing in stock/business for that matter) will also benefit greatly from this book. There are so many important things to learn about Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway, and Of Permanent Value is a perfect way to learn them all. This book also covers important people around Warren Buffett which helps me understand how Buffett become the person he is today: his philosophies, his views on life, and how he interact with other people. I learned so much from Of Permanent Value, and over the years, Of Permanent Value filled with Buffett's teaching and experiences, helps me to shape my investing philosophies, develop my competencies, and keeping things in perspective.

Kudos to Andy Kilpatrick for putting this book together and continue to update the story about the greatest value investor of our time. I also appreciate Andy Kilpatrick's and Warren Buffett's sense of humor.

First is when Warren need to make a decision who would run Salomon ($150B institution with 8000 employees) within 2 days during their first crisis. There are 12 top-level managers that he interviewed. "This was the most important hire of my life", said Warren to the Columbia business students. The chapter explain his thought process of this candidate selection in detail. Warren mentioned that the good news (for the students and the candidate) is that he didn't ask what their grades were. Warren also said, "Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy. and if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you. if you think about it, it's true, if you hire somebody without integrity, you want them to be dumb and lazy". And he conclude the topic with this statement which I think is very powerful: "Pick the kind of person to work for you that you want to marry your son or daughter. You won't go wrong". By the way, he picked Deryck Maughan for his integrity.

Second example of the chapter that I really like is how Warren put the audience of more than 2000 people through Business School in an electrifying two minutes. See how Warren answer the question of "Will developments in the generic brand area hurt coca-cola?" which is a very important questions. He explains in a nutshell with all the details and numbers how business and competition works, and using several other example like Gillette, Marlboro, Sam Cola etc, he convinced the audience that coca cola is considered immune to generics. He explains how one can save $500 for smoking generic brand vs Marlboro which is a lot of money. While a man will probably will only save $11 per year by not using Gillette Sensor and probably also leave band-aids on his face and an uncomfortable experience for opting for generics/lower quality blades. And for coca cola, the net profit margin is only 1 cents per serving (can) while a lot of the ingredients cost (such as the aluminum close to 6 cents a can, sugar 1.3 ounce per can or 1.75 cents etc) the same regardless for coke or other cola company.

Comprehensive and easy to read. I would prefer that the pictures had higher resolution (some pictures are of letters and low resolution makes the text difficult to read). Still, I highly recommend the writings of Andrew Kilpatrick.

Kaushik Bhattacharya is Professor of Mechanics and Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology. He received a NSF Young Investigator Award in 1994, the Charles Lee Powell Award in 1997 and in 2002, was invited to take part in the Frontiers of Engineering Symposium organised by the National Academy of Engineering. He is a member of various editorial boards.

Good, but could explain a little more

This book cleared up much of the mystery for me on the microstructural mechanisms behind the strange behavior of NiTi. It does a great job of using the framework of continuum mechanics to explain the kinematics of martensite, without using WLR theory, whose terms, in my opinion, have no easy physical interpretation. So if you are comfortable with continuum mechanics, with a little studying, this book will clear up many subtle points about martensite.

That said, there are a few areas where a picture, a few more sentences, and a little more derivation would have been nice. For example, before reading this book, I had never seen the kinematic compatiblity equation (Hadamaard Jump Condition) before, and Bhattacharya does not derive it or even point to a reference that does. After some thinking, I finally got it, but it's frustrating to have to work that hard when the kinematic compaitbility equation is central to understanding the rest of the results in the book.

The book is a microhistory that does much more than simply depict an event in the past; it uses the power of illustration to convey important themes in world history and to reveal the processes by which history is made.

The story of Abina Mansah--a woman "without history" who was wrongfully enslaved, escaped to British-controlled territory, and then took her former master to court--takes place in the complex world of the Gold Coast at the onset of late nineteenth-century colonialism. Slavery becomes a contested ground, as cultural practices collide with an emerging wage economy and British officials turn a blind eye to the presence of underpaid domestic workers in the households of African merchants. The main scenes of the story take place in the courtroom, where Abina strives to convince a series of "important men"--a British judge, two Euro-African attorneys, and a jury of local leaders--that her experiences and perceptions matter. "Am I free?" Abina inquires. Throughout both the court case and the flashbacks that dramatically depict her life in servitude, both the defendants and members of the court strive to "silence" Abina and to impose their own understandings and meanings upon her.

Following the graphic history in Part I, Parts II-V provide detailed historical context for the story, a reading guide that reconstructs and deconstructs the methods used to interpret the story, and strategies for using Abina in various classroom settings.

This second edition features a new gender-rich section, Part V: Engaging Abina, which explores Abina's life and narrative as a woman. Focusing on such important themes as the relationship between slavery and gender in pre-colonial Akan society, the role of marriage in Abina's experience, colonial paternalism, and the meaning of cloth and beads in her story, this section also includes a debate on whether or not Abina was a slave, with contributions by three award-winning scholars--Antoinette Burton, Sandra Greene, and Kwasi Konadu--each working from different perspectives. The second edition includes new, additional testimony that was rediscovered in the National Archives of Ghana, which is also reflected in the graphic history section.

Great book on West Africa, Slavery, and Colonialism

Abina is an incredible book and a wonderful resource for teachers/students on issues such as colonialism, slavery, justice, and gender. As a social studies teacher I have used it in my 9th-10th grade classroom and students love it and learn so much. The combination of graphics, text, and the thoughtful historical discussion at the end makes for a really unique and valuable source.

Must Have book for Dr. Seuss Week in schools!

A lot of schools celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday and most of those have a "Wacky Wednesday", well what better book to read that day?!? It's a great book to encourage critical thinking skills as students help identify all the wacky things going on page by page, plus the number of wacky things increases each picture: "I looked out the window. And I said, GEE! More things were wacky! And I saw THREE".

It's even more fun to copy some of the ideas all over the classroom or at home. My students love it when they see the shoe on the wall! Like most other Seuss classics, the rhyming flows smoothly, the story is a joy to read, and kids love listening to the book!

This was one odd my favorite books when I was little and I hope it will bedtime one of my daughter's favorites. The illustrations are fun and vibrant. Perfect for an early learner and a great book for a toddler to search for odd things on each page. A true classic.

Groundbreaking work not covered in medical school very sadly. A prophetic work regarding how to test for Hyperinsulemia which may most often lead to pre-diabetes, which most often leads tragically to Diabetes type 2. Very useful work, gave me so much clarity on my Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. (OGTT). A strong scientific evidenced base argument for applying a very sensitive test which consumers can now buy online without a medical prescription a 3 hour version with 4 insulin assays and 4 glucose Assays from LifeExtension, and see if they have increased Insulin. A Fasting Blood sugar is like a 1 day balance sheet and 15300+ people who tested below the normal level failed the test for Insulin. Their pancrease is producing too much Insulin intermittently. This cannot be detected by a basal insulin and glucose and certainly not by an A1c test(three week income statement) value of >5.6 means you are prediabetic. (which are formed when insulin increases.) High insulin has the same pathology as diabetes, without any warnings from the pathetically lagging FGB and the inadequate A1c test! Without Dr. Kraft's incredible work, I would not have continued to follow dietary lifestyle changes, lowering my carbohydrate daily levels to ,
15 grams a day to prevent insulin spikes and save my pancrease from wearing its self out and preventing Insulin resistance from reoccurring. I plan to take this test many more times to check that the lifestyle I have chosen is working, so that I do not die a premature painful death due to DM2 like so many other family members, including both grandfathers!

A light hidden under a basket

I stumbled across this book after 27 years of suffering from migraines which had by this point become debilitating. Pressured by the migraines, I eventually began to repeatedly harass my doctor, in order that we might together come up with a solution beyond a dependency on Imitrex/sumatriptan (a dependency wich began with pills and was now escalating to injections - the epipen thingy). Test after test came back normal but still I continued to suspect it was blood sugar related, mostly because I found that if I managed to eat regularly, which wasn't easy given my occupation at the time, the frequency of migraines would decrease, and if I quickly ate something protein rich like milk or chicken nuggets (if I was out), my symptoms (which I later identified as neuroglycopenia) would abate. I even went to a diabetes specialist and her tests came back normal and her recommendation was acupuncture or a shrink. Still I remained certain. And worse the migraines became. Back I went to the office and the doctor covering the office that day sends me for a glucose tolerance test. The results - ugly. Eventually, a year or so later, after nearly getting myself and potentially others as well killed after going the wrong way at a very (at that time) confusing intersection on the way to the hospital my doctor was convinced it was time to send me to see another specialist, this time, in the big city, at one of the teaching hospitals. Even then, that did not completely solve the problem, although he did help point me in the right direction (like some medical version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey). Ultimately, it was me, the waitress, googling 'symptoms of neuroglycopenia at normal blood sugar levels' who was able to accurately diagnose the issue (although the specialist alluded to it, telling me I had a problem with the glucostat (not on the internet) in my braiin, and my blood sugar levels were running hot, a.k.a. Relative Hypoglycemia. Only then, and once I began realizing that the sumatriptan wasn't doing me any favors as I found myself having greater than expected difficulty walking up flights of stairs did I finally really begin to buckle down and make the lasting changes advocated by author. This book is one that will leave you scratching your head and wondering what in the bleep is wrong with the medical establishment (a lot - for one, human beings aren't cylon models - what is 'normal' for one, isn't necessarily 'normal' for another). Anyone wanting to live longer than 56 needs to read this book. And I agree with other reviewers that it is unbelievable that this book isn't on the NYT best seller list. Apparently some other factor is at work because this book merits that and more. Why? Google 'relative hypoglycemia' and find out. Among the first items on the list is a research article from something like 1960, in which a medical doctor or psychiatrist discovers that relative hypoglycemia often presents as mental illness. I trust I don't have to tell you what that is like, spending 27 years of your life thinking you might be crazy and others thinking so as well, only to discover 27 years in that it is simply a matter of better controlling your blood sugar which I've learned to do and now I feel great! Like a whole different person, with less and less frequent migraines and less and less frequent use of medication to control them. In fact, now I hardly use the sumatriptan at all, although I continue to carry it with me, in case I fail to eat soon enough to maintain my blood sugar levels, or in case I fail to accurately take into account the effects of stress/strenuous exercise. What I learned from this experience is something I've known for quite some time. That is, you have to do your own research, and you, yourself are the patient's best advocate - if not you, who? And remember, as I said to one of my best friends just the other day, it wasn't long ago that doctors were still blood letting, and as she herself remarked (in jest), they've probably still got some leaches hidden in a drawer somewhere.
